Duties:

Develop new optical concepts and technologies to enable breakthroughs in AR/VR display systems in terms of form factor, cosmetic appearance, power consumption, and optical functionalities to provide viable technical paths for AR/VR smart eyewear. Build and validate polarization diffractive and physical optics modeling tools to understand the optical responses and performance limits of those new concepts and technologies. Propose and validate solutions to mitigate the risks and limits of those new concepts. Enable the "design - prototyping -- metrology" iteration loop for developing those new concepts, collaborate Support prototyping activities with internal peers and external partners to prove the viability of subsystems in AR/VR headsets. Support evaluation and characterization of optical components, and system integration, as part of the proof-of-concept process. Collaborate with the larger research and product teams to explore concepts, perform trades and drive optical system development to create compelling experiences.

Requirements:

Requires a Doctorate degree in Optical Sciences, Optical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

Completion of one graduate-level course, one research project, or one internship involving the following skills: 1. Polarization optics, polarization ray tracing, and polarization aberration analysis; 2. Applied research or product development of optical systems requiring any combination of the following: imaging, illumination, physical optics, polarization optics, stray light analysis or holography; 3. Polarization ray tracing of optical systems; 4. Designing optical tools such as Zemax, CODE V, FRED, or ASAP; 5. Polarization optics and physical optics modeling tools, such as MATLAB, Python, COMSOL, and methods such as Jones Matrix, FDTD, or RCWA; 6. Display optics, imaging, illumination, radiometry and colorimetry, physical and geometric optics, and polarization; 7. Imaging and viewing optics design and tolerancing; 8. Solving analytical problems using quantitative approaches; 9. Aberration theory, including geometric aberration and pupil aberration; 10. Image reconstruction and iteration algorithm; 11. Optical retarder design; 12. Communicating and sharing knowledge with people who are not from an optical background; 13. Metrology for optical system and polarization optics; and 14. Liquid crystal related devices, such as SLM, LCD, or phase modulator.
