We are currently on a mission to reimagine and simplify the process of goals management for teams/individuals using the power of data (from other work-related systems) and AI. We are in the midst of building a brand new V2 version of the product from the ground up using the latest and greatest technologies. We are seeking a Principal Software Engineer who can help us on this journey of building a large-scale enterprise-ready product.

As a key Principal Software Engineer in Viva Goals, you will be responsible for architecting, developing, and operationalizing of platforms and services that power various features and scenarios for our service. You will be building the next generation goals platform components and cutting-edge generative AI capabilities, building APIs, pipelines and connections with other M365 products/services, enable Substrate capabilities, and integrate smart Goals data into surfaces where users track and collaborate on work. You will closely partner with engineers and teams across Microsoft to leverage other Platforms and Frameworks; innovate with product and design teams to create user experiences; collaborate with Security and Trust teams to engineer compliance controls for adoption across a wide range of customers and regulated industries.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees partnerships with appropriate stakeholders (e.g., project manager, technical lead) to determine user requirements within and across teams for multiple solutions or product lines.

  • Oversees teams and provide technical leadership for identification of dependencies and the development of design documents for a product, application, service, or platform.

  • Creates, implements, optimizes, debugs, refactors, and reuses code to establish and improve performance and maintainability, effectiveness, and return on investment (ROI).

  • Acts as a gatekeeper for product compliance, identifying and addressing security/privacy concerns.

  • Plays a key role in shaping the system architecture that provides measurable customer value along with driving engineering and operational excellence across the product.

  • Leverages subject-matter expertise of product features and partners with appropriate stakeholders to drive project plans, release plans, and work items.

  • Acts as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) and guides other engineers by developing and following the playbook, working on call to monitor the service for degradation, downtime, or interruptions, alerting stakeholders about status and initiates actions to restore the service when appropriate.

  • Proactively seeks new knowledge and adapts to new trends, technical solutions, and patterns that will improve the availability, scalability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of products while also driving consistency in monitoring and operations at scale.

  • Works with the team to improve the overall productivity through recommendations and improvements to tools and processes.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

  • OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 6+ years of working experience in designing, building, and managing highly available and distributed large-scale services.

  • 5+ years of experience in software engineering, preferably with full stack development using JavaScript, Java, TypeScript, Python, or Go/Golang.

  • Proficiency in using open source frameworks such as Spring/Spring Boot, React/Angular 3+, Express.js, or others for building web applications and APIs.

  • 3+ years of working experience with cloud services such as AWS, GCP, Microsoft Azure, or others, and familiarity with cloud concepts such as containers, orchestration, serverless, and microservices.

  • Knowledge of database technologies such as MySQL, Oracle, MongoDB, Redis, or others, and ability to design, optimize, and query data models.

  • Some experience with UI development, including HTML, CSS, and responsive design principles.

  • Experience with existing M365 foundational technologies.

  • Experience in software engineering practices, coding and solid foundation in data structures, algorithms with proven testing, debugging and analytical skills.

  • Familiarity with DevOps practices such as continuous integration, continuous delivery, testing, and monitoring.

Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
