The Project Engineer role is based in our field office located in Raleigh, NC and reports directly to the General Manager.

The Project Engineer will lead engineering resources within North Carolina including internal engineers/designers and external consulting specialty engineering firms. The Project Engineer will provide engineering design, project management and construction management support to the crushed stone, sand/gravel, Concrete and Asphalt operations in the Region. They will support management with project development, design, estimating and construction/implementation of major plant equipment upgrades, plant replacements and infrastructure expansion projects. In addition, this role provides smaller scale engineering advice and support to all sites, including training and sharing of best practices.

What you’ll get to do

  • Provide proactive safety guidance and ensure that all safety procedures and practices are adhered to during all projects and site visits.

  • Develop conceptual/final plans, estimates, and schedules for capital projects.

  • Have a thorough understanding of engineering design best practices, and be able to identify areas to apply them in existing and new equipment, and ensure these best practices are shared widely.

  • Direct and coordinate the engineering, general plant arrangements, procurement, construction and start-up of assigned capital projects with a focus on completing projects on time, within scope and within budget.

  • Prepare regular and timely progress and cost reports during the project and manage the entire project process of project development, execution, completion, acceptance, closure and handover.

  • Manage outside engineering, fabrication, and construction contractors.

  • Meet the needs of the region through your own work, coordination with Regional and Global teams and using contractors. Communicate the progress to all stakeholders including the provision of SteCo minutes and monthly reports to Regional teams.

  • Meet the end users’ expectations with a general focus on Best Value Design including cost per ton, functional effectiveness, long term reliability, and ease of maintenance.

  • Support and facilitate continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Provide engineering and construction services to Operations for improving operational efficiencies and process flows.

  • Provide training and coaching on capital project management, engineering design, equipment operation and other identified topics.

  • Excellent communication skills across many disciplines, especially on site, to ensure project management is effective and project goals are clear to allow for delivery of projects based on demonstrated results.

Essential Experience and Skills

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil, Mechanical, or Mining Engineering preferred but will consider other disciplines with equivalent relevant experience.

  • At least 5 years’ experience in engineering/construction, preferably in the Aggregate Industry.

  • Strong knowledge and hands-on experience of crushed stone and sand/gravel processing plants, RMC plants, Asphalt Plants, crushing and sizing equipment, wet processing, water handling equipment, water recovery equipment, conveyor haulage systems, and dust control systems.

  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, AggFlow, and Microsoft Office software including Excel, Word, Power Point, and Project.

  • Excellent personnel skills and the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of internal and external customers and contractors both verbally and in writing.

  • Highly motivated and able to work with a minimum of supervision in a multi-task, dynamic, team environment.

Preferred Experience and Skills

  • Aggregates project engineering experience

  • Licensing: Professional Engineer (P.E.) with ability to acquire licenses in other provinces or states as required.

Work Environment

  • Role operates in a manufacturing environment with moving mechanical equipment, inclement weather, heat, humidity, elevated noise levels, and dusty conditions.
