Summary of Duties:
WSU Tri-Cities Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) is funded with federal funds by the Department of Education whose purpose is to increase the number of low-income and underrepresented students who graduate from high school and successfully complete post-secondary education.
The Student Achievement Specialist (SAS) has responsibility for increasing GEAR UP students' engagement in their education, positive academic behaviors, family connection to critical school based information, post-secondary access support for students and families.
Duties include, but are not limited to: providing family outreach and education on college readiness, student and academic support services to include student advising, assessing participant's needs and creating individual action plans. The Student Achievement Specialist (SAS) will provide student mentoring and will monitor and collect student data for assessment and reporting requirements. Will work closely with school personnel and community partners and participate in after school, evening and weekend activities.
This position is housed out of WSU Tri-Cities with a work location in Prosser High School - Prosser, WA.
Required Qualifications:
• Positions require a Bachelor's degree. A Master's degree in a related field may substitute for one (1) year of professional work experience. Any combination of relevant education and professional experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
• Two (2) years of experience providing instruction or direct outreach services to students and/or working with parents in individual or group settings.
• Knowledge of community, educational and social service resources in the district's community.
• Proficiency in the use of computers and MS Office software programs Excel, Outlook, Word.
• Willingness and ability to travel overnight and work a flexible schedule, including frequent nights and weekends.
• On some occasions, ability to travel with supervisory responsibility of students.
• Must have, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver's license and meet requirements under http://policies.wsu.edu/prf/index/manuals/safety-policies-procedures-manual/sppm-7-10/ and departmental driving standards
Preferred Qualifications:
• Three (3) years experience working with middle/high school, higher education, and/or GEAR UP programs.
• Familiarity with organization and operation of school/district administration and university/community college systems.
• Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of people, including peers, university and school administrators, faculty, staff, students and parents, and the general public.
• Experience managing, tracking and reporting program data. Experience in student academic support programs.
