Basic Function for Signal Technician:
To assist in repairing, installing and maintaining traffic signal systems on County roads; and to perform related duties as assigned.
Hourly Salary Range for Traffic Signal Technician: $24.245570 - $36.368354
Basic Function for Senior Signal Technician:
To inspect, install, repair and maintain traffic signal systems on County roads; and to perform related duties as assigned.
Hourly Salary Range for Senior Traffic Signal Technician: $29.498442 - $44.247663

Traffic Signal Technician Examples of Work Performed:
Inspect traffic signal systems to determine if all components are functioning, and that signal timing is adequate to accommodate pedestrian and vehicle traffic.
Provides routine maintenance to signal systems.
Diagnose malfunctioning traffic signal systems by isolating problems to specific pieces of equipment in the cabinet, field hardware or connecting cables.
Repair malfunctioning electronic traffic signal system equipment by using standard and specialized test equipment.
Maintain tool and testing equipment for repair and diagnosis of electronic traffic signal equipment.
Manage Gopher State One Call tickets for underground utilities as they relate to traffic signals and perform field locates.
Operate maintenance equipment including overhead personal lift vehicle, hand and power tools and electronic test equipment.
Senior Traffic Signal Technician Examples of Work Performed:
Provide technical assistance in design development of traffic signal systems.
Manage work tasks and materials required for special projects.
Inspect traffic signal modifications and new construction projects.
Implement upgrades to equipment firmware for controllers.
Incorporate timing plans to operate signal systems. Develop and implement signal coordination plans.
Maintain fiber optic communication systems by diagnosis and repairing with specialty equipment.
Setup and program control equipment.
Audio pedestrian system experience and programming.
Video detection experience and programming.

Minimum Qualifications
Education: High school graduation and completion of a two-year vocational school course in electronics or equivalent.
Traffic Signal Technician Experience: None.
Senior Traffic Signal Technician Experience: Two years of experience in the maintenance and repair of electronic traffic signal devices.
Substitution: Equivalent combination of education and related experience.
Other: A valid driver's license.
Exam/Screening Process Information
The examination process will consist of the following sections with each section weighted as indicated:
Step 1. Minimum Qualifications Screening
Step 2. Training and Experience Rating = 100%
The examination for the Senior Traffic Signal Technician/Traffic Signal Technician will consist of a training and experience rating, comprised of the questions in the attached supplemental questionnaire. Not all applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will pass the training and experience rating. The rating on this supplemental questionnaire will depend on your answers to the questions - do not mark "see resume" or "see work history" as a response. Please answer all your questions clearly and completely. Failure to respond could affect your score and final rank on this examination.
Eligible List: The names of all applicants who filed a properly completed application and passed the examination/screening process shall be placed on the eligible list for an employment opportunity as a Senior Traffic Signal Technician/Traffic Signal Technician . This list will be certified to the appointing authority which may use this list to conduct interviews to fill a vacancy. Candidates will remain on the list for 30 days or until hired, whichever occurs first. A notice will be sent to applicants at the time the eligible list is posted, informing them that the list has been certified and of their status.
The top 20 scores of all applicants who pass the examination with a score of 70 or higher will be forwarded to the department for further consideration.
Veteran's Preference: This is a classified position requiring an open, competitive selection process. Veteran's Preference points will be applied after a candidate passes the examination process. Applicants who are eligible for veteran's preference should update their veteran's DD214, and other supporting documents, and submit them as an attachment at the time of application.
