Job Summary

A museum construction and technical specialist works with our exhibits crew to design and build all aspects of exhibits including cabinets, display cases, interactive modules, backgrounds, and other aspects of museum exhibits. Build specialty storage components (drawers, cabinets, trays, etc.) for research collections. Maintain and repair permanent and long-term exhibits and related cabinetry as well as sound and lighting components. Provide technical expertise for lighting, painting, construction, and sound systems.  Provide technical expertise and occasional assistance in maintaining infrastructure at the BYU Lytle Nature Preserve in southern Utah.  Effectively train and mentor undergraduate employees in an inspired learning atmosphere which follows University Standards.  

 

Essential Functions

 

  1. Design and construct various components of exhibits including framing, construction of cabinets, racks, drawers, glass and acrylic display cases, and other items needed for exhibits.  Selection and expert application of finish materials (e.g., paint, lacquer, and other finishes) to exhibit surfaces such as faux and multi-color finishes using spray, brush, or other application techniques. Responsible for budget, quality, schedule, and safety on each project including procuring materials with vendors and suppliers.

     

     

  2. Repair and maintenance of current exhibits 

     

     

  3. Electrical wiring for development and maintenance of exhibits, track lights, and other electronic or interactive features of exhibits. 

     

     

  4. Train and mentor students in the proper use of some shop equipment according to best practices for the trade and in compliance with OSHA regulations 

     

     

  5. Provide technical expertise in deciding what repairs or maintenance is needed at the Lytle Nature Preserve in southern Utah, and help coordinate with the various shops on campus to schedule repairs. 

     

     

  6. Operate a CNC router and 3D printers to design, construct, and customize specialized objects for exhibits. 

     

     

  7. Metalworking and welding in conjunction with exhibit development and general museum support functions. 

     

     

  8. Repair and maintain shop equipment and administer shop budget 

     

     

     

Education/Experience:

 

Minimum education/experience required:   

 

Five years construction industry or Journeyman Carpentry or equivalent experience

 

 

Preferred:  

Ten years (equivalent) construction industry experience

General Contractor license 

 

 

Skills, abilities, knowledge, licenses:

The skills required of this position are related to all aspects of museum exhibits and research collections.  Essential skills for this position range from maintenance of the museum's current exhibits to the design and implementatio n of a variety of complex construction projects both at the museum and at the museum's field station (the Lytle Preserve). 

 

 

Has excellent interpersonal, communication, organization skills (Preferred) (Required)  

 

Ability to read and understand building plans with a knowledge of building codes and regulations. (Required)  

 

The ability to maintain a good working relationship with all involv d personnel, including treating others with respect and kindness. (Required)  

 

Has a valid Utah Drivers' License (Required) 

 

Master Carpenter & Cabinetmaker (required) 

 

Master Painter and Finisher (required) 

 

Ability to create design plans and work from sketches, blueprints, or detailed drawings (required) 

 

Knowledge of building codes and regulations (required) 

 

Knowledge of a diversity of construction materials and techniques (required) 

 

Ability to effectively communicate with a design team and to have excellent interpersonal, communication, and organization skills (required). 

 

Ability to effectively mentor and train undergraduate student employees (required) 

 

Moderate electrical experience (required) 

 

Moderate skills in welding (required) 

 

The ability to maintain a good working relationship with all involved personnel, including treating others with respect and kindness. (Required)  

 

Has a valid Utah Drivers' License (Required) 

 

 

 

Moderate mechanical skills (preferred) 

 

General metalworking skills (preferred) 

 

Lighting design, implementation, and maintenance skills (preferred)  

 

Experience in using CAD (preferred) 

 

Experience operating a CNC router (preferred)

 

 

 

Additional Comments

 

This position requires someone with the expertise and experience to look around the museum and see where repairs or maintenance are needed and to proactively address these needs.  This position requires consistent and professional interaction across a broad spectrum of university departments and local vendors including various university physical plant departments, heating and air conditioning, electrical shop, carpentry shop, stockroom, metal shop, glass shop, mechanical shop, upholstery shop, auto shop, paint shop, etc.  Local vendors are involved with the sale and (in some cases) maintenance of - power equipment, construction materials and supplies, paint, supplies, welding supplies, electrical fixtures, equipment, and supplies, etc.
