Portage Public School Transportation Manager in Portage, Michigan

Portage Public Schools District Full-Time M-F - 6 AM to 2 PM 2024-25 School Year

Job *Summary: *

Provide safe & efficient pupil transportation for both school and extra-curricular activities. Oversee a systematic preventative maintenance program for school transportation vehicles.

Responsibilities: 

  • Leads and directs Transportation team on a day-to-day basis to ensure that services are performed
  • Schedule students for safe and efficient transportation to school and extra-curricular events.
  • Communicate and problem-solve with parents, drivers and staff regarding resolution of service and pupil
  • discipline issues.
  • Oversee daily assignment of drivers and aides for Special Education routes and for extra-curricular trips.
  • Schedule and implement commercial preventative maintenance program to comply with Michigan State Police requirements and customer service requests.
  • Plan and coordinate effective transportation employee safety and training programs including new driver training, monthly safety meetings, periodic in-service meetings, and annual bid and orientation meetings.
  • Coordinate federal mandated drug and alcohol testing program for all transportation employees.
  • Develop and oversee departmental budget, approve payroll and invoices for payment, bill customers for services rendered and supplies provided.   
  • Research and implement appropriate information systems technology for pupil transportation.
  • Works with District administrators, staff, parents and others in matters relating to pupil transportation as well as support for special programs.
  • Regular and consistent attendance.
  • Must have knowledge of and comply with the policies and procedures contained in the Portage Public Schools Handbook.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education, Experience, Skills knowledge and Abilities:

  • Associates degree or equivalent coursework in relevant field.
  • Management and supervision experience.
  • Computer skills and the ability to learn department specific software systems.
  • Traffic safety and commercial motor vehicle maintenance and operations.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in bus operations, employee training and development, basic accounting practices, and vehicle specifications and maintenance.

Required Licenses and/or Certifications:

  1. State of Michigan Mandated School Bus Supervisor Training
  2. Unrestricted Commercial Driver's License
  3. CDL License Class B/P/S
  4. Knowledge of routing techniques
  5. Drug and alcohol abuse recognition training.
