https://www.geology.pitt.edu/invites applications for a Research Assistant Professor position. We are seeking a talented and creative research scientist to work on remote sensing of rivers.

 

This appointment will work closely with the research group of Professor John Gardner, applying satellite remote sensing and deep learning techniques to develop operational products of water quality in global rivers and use these data to investigate questions in sediment transport and hydrology.

 

This appointment is approximately 2.5 years depending on the exact start date. The end date is December 31, 2026. This is a non-tenured, appointment stream position. The anticipated start date is September 1, 2024.

Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  1. Develop operational image analysis and machine learning algorithms, formulate and design research questions and studies, interpret complex data, and publish results in the peer-reviewed literature.

  2. Coordinate and lead a group of collaborators from several universities and NASA to develop and publish operational data products and metadata.

  3. Lead and/or contribute to the development and execution of grant proposals.

  4. Contribute to ongoing lab group projects.

  5. Train and supervise undergraduate and graduate students in image analysis and machine learning techniques.

The successful candidate will:

Have expertise in geospatial Python programming, satellite image analysis, big data, high-performance and/or cloud computing.

Have strong skills in a range of machine learning/deep learning methods and be able to develop custom algorithms.

Strong domain knowledge of surface hydrology, hydraulics, river sediment transport, and water quality.

Maintain and organize training data, python code, and derived data products.

 

Minimum qualifications for the Research Assistant Professor position include:

A Ph.D. in Earth Science, Environmental Engineering, or related fields with a focus on geospatial analysis applied to hydrology.

Candidates should have a publication record in peer-reviewed journals.

Preferred qualifications for Research Assistant Professor include:

Strong communication skills (interpersonal, scientific, written, and oral), and ability to work with remote teams.

Interest in developing local and global research collaborations.

Interest in writing both technical methods papers and high-impact scientific papers.

Interest in contributing to an inclusive lab and departmental culture.
