Grand Canyon University is seeking a full time Environmental Health & Safety Manager for our Facilities Department. The position is responsible for the overall implementation, management, and improvement of comprehensive EHS programs at Grand Canyon University (GCU).

What you will do:

  • Manage the development, implementation, and maintenance of campus EHS programs to ensure compliance with applicable local, state, and federal regulations.

  • Monitor changes in state and federal laws and rules that affect the operation of the University.

  • Periodically review EHS policies and procedures, and draft revisions and new policies or procedures, as required.

  • Investigate accidents and incidents resulting in injury to determine root causes and establishes measures to prevent injury recurrence.

  • Proactively address emerging safety issues and demonstrate continuous safety performance improvement for existing safety programs.

  • Ensure regulatory driven and insurance-related inspections are conducted and identified issues are addressed in a timely manner.

  • Perform routine job hazard assessments to ensure safety practices are being followed.

  • Assists with investigation of safety concerns, hazardous conditions and industrial hygiene issues reported by employees, students, and University departments. Determine the appropriate follow up actions to include hazard mitigation, performing industrial hygiene sampling, analyzing related facts, and making recommendations to management.

  • Manage and track chemical use, chemical inventory and ensures Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are properly maintained and readily available to employees.

  • Manage University-wide programs to ensure standardization of procedures for radiation safety, biological safety, laboratory safety, hazardous materials and the handling, storage, and disposal of regulated waste.

  • Coordinate University activities with professional outside consultants and contractors in the areas of hazardous waste disposal, environmental compliance, and industrial hygiene assessments.

  • Manage and facilitate EHS training programs to promote safe practices.

  • Participate in new employee orientation including overview of procedures and policies and job-specific work instructions.

  • Maintain detailed records associated with the specific duties within the safety program.

  • Stay current on new ideas and techniques in the health & safety field through such means as reading governmental and professional publications, attending seminars, and discussing related issues with other safety professionals.

  • Determine whether EHS needs are met (e.g., training, personal protective equipment, and corrective measures including non-mandated items identified in safety inspections).

  • Assist with incorporating workplace safety requirements and responsibilities into each appropriate job description and ensure that workplace safety expectations are communicated to each student and employee.

  • Ensure that periodic safety self-audits of work areas and/or facilities are conducted and oversee campuswide EHS driven safety audits of the entire campus.

  • Co-chair the Management Safety Council and participate in various departmental safety committees.

  • Perform other duties as requested.

    What you need:

  • Master’s degree and seven years of related work experience; or a bachelor’s degree and ten years of related work experience. Preferred degree in Chemistry, Biology, Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related technical field.

  • EHS experience in an academic, medical, or industrial setting desired.

  • An equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience may be substituted upon hiring manager’s approval.

  • Must have a valid Arizona Driver’s License and driving record must follow University policy.

  • Must pass a pre-employment background investigation, including fingerprinting.

  • Thorough knowledge of environmental, health, and safety regulations, such as RCRA, OSHA and other applicable EPA regulations; laboratory safety and hazardous waste management; ability to research and interpret rules and regulations; ability to create policies and procedures for campus departments.

  • General knowledge of toxicology, chemistry, and hazardous materials characteristics including handling, proper personal protective equipment, safety precautions, and emergency response procedures.

  • Strong communication/interpersonal skills and ability to effectively interact with a highly diverse campus community.

  • Skilled in fostering effective working relationships with representatives of the community, governmental agencies, business representatives and other agencies.

  • Proven ability to demonstrate a high degree of personal integrity and emotional maturity.

  • Must be comfortable preparing and presenting information to a variety of audience sizes.

  • Excellent planning and organization skills.

  • Ability to assess and identify hazardous conditions to determine an appropriate course of action.

  • Demonstrated analytical, critical thinking, problem identification and resolution skills.
