This position serves as the ​​​​Manager of Spiritual Care Services and oversees the Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program.

Currently this position will oversee 4 Full Time Chaplains and 8 Resident Chaplains.

Location : Banner University Medical Center - 1111 E McDowell Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85006

Schedule : Mon-Fri 8:00AM-5:00PM

POSITION SUMMARY

This position is responsible for managing the Clinical Pastoral Education program at an assigned medical center. Assists in monitoring and maintaining compliance with the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) standards.

CORE FUNCTIONS

  1. Educates, evaluates and maintains records of students enrolled in the ACPE program at the medical center, using case-based methodologies to ensure pastoral competence. Insures quality control of services provided by Chaplain Interns and Residents.

  2. Recruits, interviews, selects and evaluates students in the ACPE program.

  3. Serves as primary faculty for the Clinical Pastoral Education program, which includes: developing curriculum; utilizing resources within the facility to optimize the education of students in the Clinical Pastoral Education program; facilitating didactics; managing student education through hands-on practice of the art of Spiritual Care; maintains theological library; and/or, performing other related activities.

  4. Participates as a member of the Clinical Pastoral Education Professional Advisory Committee in providing quality assurance for the ACPE program, the Department of Spiritual Care, and assigned facility.

  5. Assists with specific aspects of spiritual and religious care including the maintenance and promotion of an interfaith environment and adherence to ACPE standards for accreditation.

  6. Assists in providing pastoral care to the hospital community and meeting the spiritual needs of patients, families and staff. Assists with special services to address these needs as necessary.

  7. This position is responsible for managing the ACPE program at an assigned facility. Maintains connections with regional and national ACPE organization, serving on working committees as appropriate. Maintains interdepartmental and interdisciplinary relationships throughout the hospital. Internal customers include leadership, patient care teams, physicians, staff, students, and volunteers. External customers include physicians, patients, family members, faith communities, and area clergy.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of principles and practices of pastoral/ministry services as normally obtained through the completion of a Masters of Divinity or equivalent from an accredited seminary (as assessed by ACPE Certification as an Associate Supervisor or ACPE Supervisor) and a working knowledge of pastoral service and ministry principles and practices as normally demonstrated through a minimum of three years relevant experience. Ordination and/or endorsement by a recognized faith group or equivalent as assessed by ACPE.

Possession of ACPE Associate Supervisor or Supervisor Certification.

Advanced knowledge of educational theory, supervisory theory, group process, personality theory, and world religions as acknowledged by the ACPE certifying body. Skilled at teaching at the graduate level utilizing case-based methodologies. Skilled in being tolerant and empathetic of intense emotions and situations. Must have excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills to effectively interact, convey information, and provide assistance to a diverse group of individuals. Skilled in maintaining composure and professional demeanor in difficult, volatile, and stressful situations. Skilled in performing a variety of pastoral roles and functions. Skilled in crisis intervention and conflict resolution methodologies. Skilled at public speaking. Skilled in reviewing statistical data and making appropriate projections/inferences. Skilled in working independently. Skilled in maintaining documentation of observations and services provided. Ability to maintain ethical standards as articulated by the ACPE.
