Job Description

UPenn Veterans Upward Bound (VUB), a federally funded college preparatory program, provides services at no cost to 160 veterans living across the following counties: Bucks, PA; Chester, PA; Delaware, PA; Montgomery, PA; Philadelphia, PA; Camden, NJ and Burlington, NJ.

The program offers free virtual and in-person college prep services including:

  • academic assessment, digital literacy programming, advising, and counseling;

  • non-credit academic classes and tutoring;

  • college and financial aid application assistance, and educational support services.

The primary goal of VUB is to prepare eligible veterans to enter, persist, and graduate from post-secondary education of their choice.

Teaching Schedule:

  • Courses take place virtually, via Zoom, with office hours at UPenn Campus.

  • Each section meets for approximately 120 minutes, once per week. Teachers can choose to teach multiple weekly sections if they are available.

  • Days and time of each section can be negotiated based on teacher availability.

  • In addition to teaching responsibilities, we require teachers join us for periodic staff meetings.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement curriculum that aligns with the needs and goals of the Veterans Upward Bound program.

  • Teach using a variety of instructional strategies and techniques that are suitable for adult learners.

  • Conduct assessments and provide feedback to students to monitor their progress and identify areas for improvement.

  • Collaborate with other program staff to develop and implement student support services, including tutoring, mentoring, and academic counseling.

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student progress and attendance.

  • Participate in program meetings, training sessions, and professional development activities.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in English, Math, Science, Spanish, Education, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.

  • ​At least 2 years of experience teaching adult learners.

  • Knowledge of best practices in adult education, including instructional strategies and techniques for teaching reading, writing, speaking, mathematics, science, and critical thinking skills.

  • Experience with online teaching and the use of synchronous instructional technologies.

  • Familiarity with the needs and challenges faced by veteran students.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse groups of students and staff.

  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks.

  • Familiarity with learning management tools, such as Canvas or Blackboard.

Compensation:

$25-$30 hourly
