Shift Manager

Position Summary: Assists the Assistant Warehouse Manager (AGM) with directing and controlling warehouse activities to ensure the efficient and economical utilization of the facility for storing and distributing materials and finished goods inventories. Plans and schedules department functions for assigned departments (i.e. wholesale, retail, specified shift, inbound, outbound, etc) to ensure the prompt delivery of merchandise and in the amount ordered.

Primary Responsibilities/Accountabilities of the Job:

  • Assists the AGM with developing operational plans to meet division objectives.

  • Sets individual goals and priorities for assigned Supervisors.

  • Monitors assigned department productivity reports to ensure production goals are achieved.

  • Works closely with the AGM in budget preparation and managing the facility to stay within budget.

  • Keeps abreast of inventory levels to assure balanced levels of merchandise and work loads.

  • Participates in the oversight of distribution center and traffic operations on one shift.

  • Insure quality and customer service. Recommends appropriate training programs.

  • Develop/train managers

  • Review and approve invoices for assigned department(s).

  • Assists the AGM with insuring workplace safety and security programs are in place.

  • Works closely with Human Resources to insure all benefit polices, payroll programs, labor laws, etc. are in compliance.

  • Assists with managing the Performance Appraisal process and recommends merit increases for assigned management team.

  • Provides leadership for all associates (hourly and salaried) to insure teamwork is accomplished.

Internal & External Contacts:

Internal : Management, Hourly Associates, IE, IT, Clerical

External: Supply and equipment vendors, Import and Domestic traffic, Strategic Services,

Corp IT, truck lines, Corporate merchants.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Direct : 2-3 Ops Mgrs; 2-5 Supervisors; onsite rep from staffing service.

Indirect : 5 Asst Supvs; 8 clericals; 250 hourly warehouse workers in addition to other management members across all shifts for assigned functions/project work.

Budgetary Responsibilities:

Capital : $.5-1 million

Expense: $1-6 million

Decision Making:

  • Must be able to make sound business decisions based upon knowledge of customer expectations, volume capability and equipment capacities.

  • Must balance daily volume demands in conjunction with budget restraints.

  • Considers Employment Law applications so as not to jeopardize the company when making decisions involving associate requirements.

  • Analyzes major break downs and recommends to the AGM a best course of action taking into account total costs for labor, possible downtime and repair.

Resourcefulness/Creativity:

  • Works closely with the AGM to develop contingency plans for work volume in case of abnormal operating circumstances.

  • Utilizes appropriate managerial techniques to motivate associate staff.

  • Recommends appropriate training programs to the AGM to enhance team development and skill sets.

  • Fosters an environment that creates associate teamwork and dedication

Environment:

  • Works closely with warehouse management and corporate information systems

Qualifications & Experience:

Experience:

Minimum of 4-6 years as a supervisor and/or other distribution center management role which includes experience with planning and budgeting in an automated facility. Automation background in apparel is preferred.

Education:

4 year business or related degree. MBA is a plus.

Skills:

Leadership, tenacity, team spirit, solid oral and written communication skills, basic computer knowledge. RF and automation experience is a major plus.
