Senior Spacecraft Ground Control Systems Engineer

The Senior Spacecraft Ground Control Systems Engineer will join a team responsible for the essential ground control software systems that manage Telesat's Geosynchronous (GEO) and LightSpeed fleets. Responsibilities include developing new features, optimizing, and maintaining vital operational systems, as well as supporting other engineering teams with control systems and associated software.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, monitor and maintain the GEO satellite control systems in use for the current GEO fleet operated by Telesat. Telesat is currently operating 20+ spacecraft in geosynchronous orbit and the control systems are critical to the safety and well-being of the spacecraft.

  • Monitor and maintain the Lightspeed satellite control systems for the upcoming Lightspeed fleet of spacecraft. Applicant will be learning the control system for the new fleet and will be involved in modifying the software to suit the Telesat operations concept.

  • Develop and maintain software related to the control systems and to satellite operations. The Satellite Operations Systems group produces an assortment of software to complement the control systems and assist with operations. This includes spacecraft data storage and visualization, monitoring tools, automation, etc.

  • Assist the Satellite Control Center and Satellite Operations user community in their efforts related to the utilization of the control systems and related software. Applicant will regularly interface with other teams for spacecraft-control related tasks and projects.

  • Participate in Spacecraft Transfer Orbit missions. Telesat assists other spacecraft operators and manufacturers in getting their spacecraft to their orbit/orbital location.

Education and Experience

  • Degree or Diploma in Computer Science, Software Engineering or equivalent experience.

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in software design and engineering.

  • Experience with C, C++, or Java. Python experience is an asset.

  • Experience with the Linux operating system.

  • Familiar with cybersecurity principals and best practices.

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Ability to summarize complex problems, solutions and recommendations.

  • Fluent in English, both written and oral.

  • Occasional international travel may be required; therefore, candidates will need to provide proof that they have no national/international travel or visa restrictions.

  • Self motivating.

  • Ability to work as part of a team.

  • Willingness to provide off hours support as part of a call-out rotation.

  • Travel, support of projects across multiple time zones and other project requirements may require overtime.

The successful candidate must be able to work in Canada and obtain clearance under the Canadian Controlled Goods program (CGP). The candidate should also have the ability to obtain a NATO secret security clearance.
