Position Summary:The specific contributions of the Activity Specialist are to facilitate recreation interventions for groups and individual patients. Group and individual recreation interventions are designed for patients to be able to participate in meaningful and functional leisure activities, in adjustment to mental health illness, upon discharge. Recreation therapy includes a variety of programs that promote functional abilities related to leisure; promote the acquisition and application of leisure-related skills, knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors; and provide opportunities to utilize leisure interests for improvement of healthy, independent, and successful leisure lifestyle. Maintain ongoing contact and build rapport with all patients on assigned area to determine response to treatment activities. Encourage patients to participate in treatment schedule. Groups are reviewed for quality through direct observation and discussion during supervisory meetings.

The Activity Specialist is responsible for knowing patients leisure lifestyle through implementing a Recreation Therapy Initial Leisure Screening. Time will be allocated for individual recreation therapy screenings of assigned patient caseload to determine leisure patterns, preferences, strengths, and patients leisure goals. Activity Specialist will work with CTRS to identify goals and evidence-based recreation therapy treatment intervention strategies for each patient. The Activity Specialist is responsible for implementing effective recreational therapy activities to produce targeted, meaningful, and positive behavioral changes and enhance patients ability to adjust to their mental health

Documentation of patient contact is completed within an electronic medical record. This consists of a short description of the recreation therapy intervention provided, the purpose of the intervention, the individuals response to interventions with regards to their specific treatment goals, and plan with regards to their specific treatment goals.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

Recreation Therapy Groups and Individual Sessions: Provide recreation therapy treatment groups/individual sessions must have interventions that promote functional abilities related to leisure; promote the acquisition and application of leisure-related skills, knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors; and provide opportunities to utilize leisure interests for improvement of healthy, independent, and successful leisure lifestyle. Maintain ongoing contact and build rapport with all patients on assigned area to determine response to treatment activities. Encourage patients to participate in treatment schedule.

Screening & Treatment Planning: Determine leisure patterns, preferences, strengths, and patients recreation therapy goals using assigned leisure screenings and medical records and assessments. Work with CTRS to identify goals and evidence-based recreation therapy treatment intervention strategies for each patient. Possess detailed knowledge of recreation therapy intervention planning process, including programming considerations, types of programs, nature and scope of interventions, and selection of programs to achieve the assessed needs and desired outcomes from the patient.

Documentation: Write progress notes for assigned groups and individual contacts. This consists of a short description of recreation therapy interventions, the purpose of the intervention, the individuals response to interventions with regards to their specific treatment goals, and plan with regards to their specific treatment goals. Action for non-attendance should include steps to help the patient attend the group/individual session. These notes are reviewed for completion and quality through m dical records reviews.
