Position Announcement

 

Utah Valley University is seeking a part-time System Specialist! Working under the supervision of the IT Director of Technology and Computing, the Systems Specialist (I, II, III) enforces procedures and solves technical issues to ensure availability, reliability, stability, and scalability of systems. Installs and maintains hardware, software, and operating systems for servers and related components. Installs and maintains business applications running on the systems. Provides support on technical and functional issues for IT systems. This includes general maintenance, security and vendor-supplied updates, basic administration, adhoc reporting, and execution of processes and procedures for ongoing management of the systems environment. The Systems Specialist will be responsible for the daily administration of assigned systems and their integration with other institutional systems and business processes.

 

Summary of Responsibilities

 

• Collaborates with network engineers, application administrators, database administrators, and systems administrators to enforce procedures as needed and solve technical issues, ensuring availability, reliability, stability, and scalability of systems to meet business demands.

• Supports systems and system resource issues, providing technical expertise in a variety of computer platforms and operating systems to academic and administrative end users. Installs, configures, and maintains systems hardware, performs system configuration management tasks including backup and recovery, upgrades, maintenance fixes, and vendor-supplied updates.

• Creates, modifies and executes shell scripts, performs transaction and security audits, monitors system performance and creates reports. Creates, documents, and maintain customization to assigned applications.

• Researches networking products, services, protocols, and standards to remain current in technologies. Researches system products, services, and technologies related to server hardware and software. Assists with administration and monitoring of data backup and restore operations as needed.

• Installs, configures, creates and maintains physical and virtual servers.

• Performs other job related duties, as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

This position is a career ladder position and will be placed at one of the following grade levels depending on qualifications:

 

Level I - Graduation from an accredited institution with an associates degree in Information Technology or related field, plus 1 year of experience related to the essential functions/duties, 6 months of which must be directly related to the essential functions/duties of the position, administering and maintaining enterprise-level IT systems is preferred; OR any combination of higher education and experience directly related to the essential functions/duties totaling three years, 6 months of which must be directly related to the essential functions/duties of the position.

 

Level II - Graduation from an accredited institution with an bachelors degree in Information Technology or related field; OR any combination of higher education and experience directly related to the essential functions/duties totaling four years.

 

Level III - Graduation from an accredited institution with an bachelors degree in Information Technology or related field, plus 1 year of experience related to the essential functions/duties administering and maintaining enterprise-level IT systems is preferred, OR any combination of higher education and experience directly related to the essential functions/duties totaling fiv years.

 

Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities

 

• Knowledge of Windows Server OS, Mac OS, Linux, XML, and SQL Server.

• Knowledge of storage technologies such as SAN or NAS.

• Knowledge of virtualization technologies such as VMWare or HyperV.

• Knowledge of various computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, database, PowerPoint, Internet tools, email systems, performance monitoring tools, and other general computer skills.

• Knowledge of TCP/IP and application network protocols, firewall management, operating system configuration, anti-virus software, and relational databases.

• Knowledge of load balancing, clustering, and caching procedures and processes.

• Knowledge of Active Directory.

• Skills in customer service.

• Skills in trouble shooting.

• Skills in communication both verbal and written

• Ability to install, configure, and maintain server system hardware including SCSI, RAID, SAN/NAS, and I/O topology.

• Ability to create and maintain server and desktop VMs.

• Ability to create desktop images.

• Ability to administer users and computers in Active Directory and create GPOs.

• Ability to install networking equipment and configure firewalls.

• Ability to clearly present technical ideas to non-technical users.

• Ability to work team-oriented, collaborative environment.

• Ability to be highly self-motivated with the ability to learn quickly.
