Position Announcement

 

Utah Valley University is seeking a Lab Manger! Working under the direction of the Nursing Department Chair, the Lab Manager is responsible for the oversight, administration and operation of the Nursing Learning and Simulation Center (NLSC), supporting faculty and providing an optimal environment for the instruction of essential hands-on patient care skills. Under the supervision of the Department Chair, coordinates the NLSC budget. Responsible for the purchase, maintenance, repair, and inventory of lab and simulation equipment and supplies. Procures both durable and expendable items through the university procurement process for lab and simulation operations.

 

Coordinates with Nursing Department leadership for the scheduling of labs and simulations. Reviews, processes, and approves or denies additional requests for lab and simulation space based on primary laboratory and simulation schedule demands. Ensures operation of scheduled simulations occur, including the preparation, set up, delivery and takedown of simulation sessions. Coordinates simulation technician schedules to ensure coverage for scheduled simulations. Coordinates with faculty for the storage, set up and take down of supplies and equipment used during lab classes. Orients faculty, simulation technicians, students and others as needed on simulation standards, processes, and operations. Promotes the lab and simulation program, conducts tours, and performs demonstrations for multiple parties, including potential donors, educational and academic representatives, alumni, prospective students, and other outside interested parties.

 

Summary of Responsibilities

 

• Manage Lab Operations - Works closely with faculty regarding the vision and mission for the lab. Forecasts current and future equipment requirements and student needs within lab/simulation courses. Confers with faculty and provides information on current trends of technology and practices for providing an exceptional learning experience for students. Continually works to refine processes to create an environment that supports teaching and learning and assures smooth daily operations. Coordinates with faculty in the operation of simulation equipment, task trainers, simulator, and instructional equipment and software. Develops and implements workflow processes for the lab. Supervises simulation technicians and student lab assistants in their defined roles, assignments, functions, and responsibilities.

• Lab Setup & Function - Based on student needs and direction of faculty, supervises lab setup and takedown of equipment, supplies, and other resources as needed while minimizing student/faculty downtime during scheduled lab sessions. Ensures function tests during setup and rehab during breakdown, using current manufacturer recommendations. Participates as a member of the Lab & Simulation Committee.

• Supplies-Maintains inventory and acquires supplies following university procurement procedures to ensure efficient and uninterrupted simulation and lab operation. In coordination with the Department Chair, prepares and manages lab budget, considering faculty input and program needs. Participates in grant preparation with faculty to augment inventory of equipment. Coordinates Nursing Department-approved recycling program.

• Equipment - Maintains inventory and working knowledge of simulation and lab multimedia equipment. Coordinates the installation and repair of all lab and simu lation equipment,Including information systems/multimedia equipment with approved UVU departments. Develops and maintains a preventive maintenance plan for all current and future lab asse s. Budgets, schedules and implements preventive maintenance for all equpment. Orients faculty on equipment use and updates faculty when operational changes occur.

• Lab Scheduling - Maintains office hours based on student needs and faculty priorities. Assists with scheduling for lab instructional sessions and manages lab assistant scheduling for lab servicing or open lab periods. Manages scheduling for open lab access. Coordinates, plans, and sets up practical tests including manikins, skill-props, and supplies. Recruits, schedules, and coordinates staff and simulated patients for lab/simulation experiences.

• Attends meetings, trainings, workshops, conferences, continuing education, etc., as appropriate. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

• Graduation from a regionally accredited institution with a bachelor's degree in Nursing or a similar healthcare field.

• A combination of education and full-time work experience in a related field totaling a minimum of six years may also be considered.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with lab/simulation equipment and education.

 

Licenses or Certifications:

Licensure in a healthcare field (if appropriate and applicable).

 

Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities

 

Knowledge

 

• Working knowledge of lab education practices.

• Working knowledge of equipment and latest trends.

• Working knowledge of information technology including computers, monitoring systems, and word

• processing applications.

 

Skills

 

• Familiarity with implementing inventory controls, practices, and standard procedures.

• Customer service-oriented with effective "people" skills.

• Excellent organization, time management, and communication skills (both verbal and written).

• Skills in multi-tasking and prioritizing with minimal supervision.

 

Abilities

 

• Ability to plan, coordinate, and implement program equipment requirements.

• Ability to stock and maintain the inventory of lab supplies and equipment needed for simulation and

• skills lab use through the university procurement process and other methods.

• Ability to maintain and repair lab and simulation manikins to ensure proper function.
