Adjunct Business and Economics Faculty

Position description Northwestern College is seeking a pool of qualified applicants for possible, temporary part-time teaching assignments. The Department of Business and Economics regularly relies on experienced and dedicated part-time professionals to teach the following courses in its curriculum. Teaching assignments may be in person, online or in a hybrid format. Instructors are compensated on a per-course basis. We welcome regular or long-term adjunct arrangements. Current needs for instructors in business and economics include:

Small Business ManagementThis course focuses on current theory and practice relating to starting and continuing management of small and family businesses. As such, it is designed for students contemplating management or ownership of a small business. The course will focus on leadership, decision-making, management, marketing, financial controls and other necessary processes to ensure the successful start-up and long-term health of the small business enterprise. It will include identifying the particularities of small business management, analyzing process and life cycle, focusing on growth, and taking an emphasis on total quality management.

Principles of Microeconomics Microeconomics deals with price determination and how the price system functions. Supply and demand, output, competition, monopoly, resource pricing, international trade and finance will be studied.

Money and Banking This course is designed to increase understanding of how banks and the banking system fit into the entire economic system. The functions of money, the federal reserve system, monetary theory, inflation and the international financial system will be taught.

Qualifications A master’s-level education in the discipline is preferred. Individuals with a bachelor’s degree or an unrelated master’s degree may be alternatively qualified if they possess substantial recent (within the last five years) work experience and/or professional certificates and licensures.

The college is currently authorized to hire adjuncts from the states of California, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, Michigan, Maryland, Montana, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas and Washington. Application process The department maintains an open and rolling application process designed to identify a group of the most highly qualified individuals who may be called upon to teach as the need arises. Individuals whose initial application materials indicate a potential fit with the department’s needs and the college’s mission will be invited for an interview with the department. Upon completion of this process, successful candidates will be informed of concrete teaching needs and timetables by the department chair. While applicants are welcome to submit materials at any time, hiring decisions are generally made in September and April for the following semester.
