Job Summary

This position involves collecting, recording and handling data for funded research projects within the Benthic Ecology Program of the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL). Duties to encompass participating in all aspects of ongoing research projects involving marine organisms. Ability to A commitment to accuracy and quality assurance required. Some field work required.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Processing of biological samples.

  • Identifying, counting and measuring marine organisms.

  • Photo imaging of biological samples.

  • Data entry of project data.

  • Creating and maintaining project databases.

  • Quality Assurance (QA)/Quality Control (QC) verification of project databases.

  • Monitoring the progress and status of ongoing projects.

  • Following standard operating procedures (SOP).

  • Preparing sampling gear and preparing for field work.

  • Participating in field work.

  • Maintaining field gear and the general laboratory inventory as needed.

  • Coordinating with other unit personnel relative to project objectives

  • Working closely with the laboratory coordinator and principal investigator to fulfill reporting requirements.

  • Adhering to all University and Departmental Policies.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Marine Biology or in related field and/or two years related experience and/or training. Valid Driver’s License required.

  • Skilled with MS Office suite of excel, word and outlook.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with laboratory technical work and field work. Ability to obtain, record, and check counts and measurements. Ability to use or learn to use dichotomous keys to identify benthic organisms a plus. Knowledge of or willingness to learn QA/QC procedures for verification of project data. Ability to follow standard operating procedures (SOPs). Data entry and management skills preferred. Experience working in a marine laboratory preferred. Experience with boat handling a plus.
