Description

Our client, a Local Unified School District, is seeking a Staff Attorney to support legal initiatives related to the expansion of California’s Transitional Kindergarten (TK) program. With major regulatory changes impacting early childhood education, this role will provide legal guidance on contract negotiations, regulatory compliance, procurement, and policy development.

This position requires a legal professional with a strong background in public sector contracts, procurement, and regulatory compliance. The ideal candidate should be adaptable, proactive, and eager to contribute to various legal matters that will shape the district’s approach to early childhood education expansion. This is a fully remote role; however, candidates must be based in California and possess an active California Bar license.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal counsel on regulatory changes related to California’s Transitional Kindergarten (TK) expansion, including compliance with new state and federal mandates.

  • Draft, review, negotiate, and redline contracts, including employment agreements, vendor contracts, and facility development agreements.

  • Assist in procurement processes for construction, teacher recruitment, and service providers in compliance with government regulations.

  • Conduct legal research on emerging TK policies and provide strategic recommendations to district leadership.

  • Collaborate with district officials, policymakers, and legal teams to ensure regulatory and policy compliance.

  • Support employment contract negotiations, ensuring alignment with new TK requirements and teacher credentialing standards.

  • Advise on facility expansion projects, including navigating government approval processes for new school developments.

  • Assist with drafting policies, agreements, and legal documents to facilitate the district’s TK expansion efforts.

    Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.

  • Active California Bar License (required).

  • 3+ years of legal experience, preferably in public sector law, education law, or government administration.

  • Strong background in contract negotiation, drafting, and redlining within the government or public sector.

  • Procurement experience related to government or public education projects is highly desirable.

  • Knowledge of public administration, regulatory compliance, and government approval processes.

  • Ability to work across multiple legal areas and adapt to evolving regulatory landscapes.

  • Strong legal research, analytical, and writing skills with the ability to communicate complex issues clearly.

  • A proactive, self-motivated legal professional who enjoys working on diverse projects and wearing multiple hats.

Why Apply?

This is a unique opportunity to play a critical role in shaping California’s early childhood education landscape. The selected attorney will gain experience across regulatory compliance, contract negotiations, policy development, and procurement while working on a high-impact statewide initiative. If you’re an attorney with a strong public sector background who thrives in dynamic environments and enjoys working on varied legal matters, this is an excellent opportunity to contribute to a meaningful education reform initiative.
