Description

Department of Public Works Division Streets and Bridges is seeking a Lead Mason to perform maintenance and repairs to streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, ADA installation, replace damaged brick and cobblestone, and utility cut restorations.

The Department of Public Works builds, maintains, and operates the physical facilities that support and enhance the lives of Norfolk’s citizens, businesses, and visitors, including the City’s Storm Water System, Street Network and Waste Management and Recycling Systems. The Department is comprised of 8 divisions that function collectively to make your commute safe and efficient, your neighborhood more attractive, and the streets and sidewalks clean and well-maintained.

Hiring Salary Range: $41,231 - $47,415.65

(Additional $5,000 CDL Stipend upon obtaining Commercial Driver’s License)

Essential Functions

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Spreads, levels, finishes and shapes freshly poured concrete in the repair and construction of a wide variety of structures.

  • Prepares sites for concrete work by breaking up damaged concrete, leveling or contouring the ground, building and setting forms, cutting and placing reinforcement materials, and similar activities.

  • Uses hand tools and power equipment.

  • Reads and interprets plans, blueprints and state and federal specifications; performs the necessary tasks according to required standards for dimensions and finish.

  • Builds and/or repairs sidewalks, curbs, gutters, steps, ramps, drainage structures, support structures and related types of structures.

  • Repairs brick by removing and replacing damaged brick, cobblestone and relaying masonry or cutting stone with masonry saw.

  • Cleans work site areas and equipment.

  • Directs and instructs lesser skilled workers as assigned.

  • Requires physical ability to stand, stoop, and bend.

  • Must be able to load and unload equipment and lift a maximum of 75 pounds.

  • Requires ability to understand oral and written instructions.

  • Assumes the duties of supervisor in their absence by completing time sheets, performing inspections on jobs, contacting customers, closing jobs and directing activities of the team.

  • Must be able to drive City vehicles and light construction equipment.

  • Requires normal hearing, peripheral and night vision, and depth perception to safely work in areas with high traffic volume.

  • Must be able to work long shifts in adverse weather conditions, night or day, including extreme heat or cold and under emergency conditions.

Education/Experience

Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.

Four years' experience in masonry work.

Additional Information & Requirements

Must possess Driver’s License. Must provide a copy of Division of Motor Vehicle driving record (obtained within last 30 days) during the interview. Must obtain a class B commercial driver’s license within six months of employment with the City.

Signing Bonus: This position is eligible for a one-time $5000 sign on bonus.

  • Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.

  • Retirement

    If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

    If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

  • The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
