WR Systems Engineering Manager, Hardware in Norfolk, Virginia

Clearance Requirement: Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance

Travel Requirements : Occasional

Location: Norfolk, VA

SUMMARY : WR has an opportunity for a Hardware Engineering Manager to conduct, research, develop, design, and test electrical components, equipment, and systems and provide functional engagement of assigned personnel. This position reports to the Director, Engineering.

Position responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:

Electrical/Mechanical:

  • Provides day-to-day management of assigned personnel, to include handling routine staff issues, resource allocation, training, performance management, career development, compensation management, disciplinary actions, and separation within WR’s matrixed engineering organization.

  • Hires and maintains assigned software engineering personnel.

  • Provides technical management assistance to a group of software engineers within areas of core technical competency.

    If Electrical:

  • Designs electronic circuits, components and integrated systems, utilizing ferroelectric, nonlinear, dielectric, phosphorescent, photo-conductive, and thermoelectric properties of materials.

  • Designs test control apparatus and equipment, determines procedures for testing products and directs engineering personnel in fabrication of test control apparatus and equipment.

  • Directs field operations and maintenance of electronic installations.

  • Evaluates operational systems and recommends design modifications to eliminate causes of malfunctions or changes in system requirements.

  • Provides technical direction to less experienced personnel and has considerable input on new design directions.

  • Independently consults with customers to gather information about program needs, objectives, functions, features, and overall requirements.

  • Uses computer-assisted engineering and design software and equipment to perform engineering tasks.

  • Collaborates with multidiscipline engineering teams to evaluate internal and external system interfaces and impacts on operational and performance requirements of overall system.

    If Mechanical:

  • Plans and directs engineering personnel in fabrication of test control apparatus and equipment, and development of methods and procedures for testing products or systems.

  • Ensures work processes, design solutions, products, tools, and training needs of the organization’s mechanical design and engineering personnel are in accordance with contractual requirements.

  • Top technical contributor in the design, fabrication, assembly, testing, and installation of mechanical systems or products.

  • Works directly with senior engineering personnel from other engineering disciplines to ensure feasibility, development, testing, and project continuity meet customer expectations and technical requirements.

  • Evaluates operational systems and recommends design modifications to eliminate causes of malfunctions or changes in system requirements.

  • Uses computer-assisted engineering and design software and equipment to perform engineering tasks.

  • Directs and coordinates the design, documentation, fabrication and installation activities to ensure products and systems conform to all mechanical requirements and customer specifications.

  • Performs as the lead technical authority in the development, implementation, and optimization of new technical resources, equipment, and work processes.

  • Using experience designs products or systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines, and mechanical, thermal, hydraulic, or heat transfer systems.

  • Using extensive experience designs products and systems to interface machines, hardware, and software.

  • Using extensive experience creates technical drawings.

  • Evaluates complex field installations and recommends design modifications to eliminate machine or system malfunctions, interferences, or structural inadequacies.

  • Reviews and redlines engineering drawing packages and technical documents to optimize supply chain management, provisioning, maintainability, and overall life-cycle management requirements.

  • Determines solution path for complex machining, sheet metal, or other fabrication challenges.

  • Understands complex concepts and workflow processes from other engineering disciplines and organizational business directives to optimize mechanical engineering and design strategies, work processes, tools, training, and personnel requirements.

    Candidates must possess the following knowledge, skills, and experience:

    If Electrical:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Systems Engineering Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Computer/Software Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Math, Physics or related scientific discipline.

  • Ten (10) + years of professional engineering design experience in one of the following areas: Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Interface protocols (I/O); Digital design using state-of-the art microprocessors; Analog, power and/or RF design.

  • Master’s degree in Engineering Management, Business Administration, or in related technical discipline preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience with team/group leadership.

  • Demonstrated use of appropriate electrical engineering tools.

  • Experience providing full life-cycle engineering support on DoD-sponsored programs.

  • Computer proficiency with MS Office applications, including Word, Excel, Project and PowerPoint.

    If Mechanical:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering, physics, or related scientific discipline.

  • Ten (10) + years of professional engineering design, test, and analysis experience in one of the following areas: Shock and vibration, and/or Airborne and structure borne noise; Heat transfer/dissipation, Chassis, Circuit Card, Connector, and/or Harness layout for Optimization of Mechanical Design for accessibility and ease of Repair and Replacement.

  • Master’s degree in Engineering Management, Business Administration, or in related technical discipline preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience with team/group leadership.

  • Demonstrated use of appropriate mechanical engineering tools.

  • Experience providing full life-cycle engineering support on DoD-sponsored programs.

  • Computer proficiency with MS Office applications, including Word, Excel, Project and PowerPoint.
