Summary: Gathers accurate, on-the-ground data collection that supports federal reporting on rail system use. Conducts passenger field counts in a variety of settings. Supports compliance with federal reporting requirements for rail system utilization and service equity.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Conduct field counts directly on trains throughout the entire NJ Transit Rail Network.

  • Conduct field counts at various train stations, including but not limited to Hoboken, Newark, and Secaucus.

  • Track and report ridership data while maintaining accurate and up-to-date records.

  • Ensure the accuracy and integrity of all collected ridership data.

  • Maintain detailed documentation of all counts performed.

  • Document and report field counts and data in a timely manner.

  • Collaborate with team members and service planning staff to ensure departmental ridership records are complete and current for system-wide analysis.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • High School diploma.

  • Statistical and computer background preferred.

  • Strong safety focus.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings, late nights, and weekends.

  • Proficiency in basic data entry and reporting (Microsoft Excel preferred).

Working Environment

  • Mostly Outdoors

  • Office hours are limited. (Twice a week, for 2 hours)

Physical Demands

  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.

  • Ability to access work locations during off hours and weekends.

Other Conditions:

Must be capable of accepting assignments to remote locations. Must be available 26 weekends per year, flexible 5-day week: Mon - Sun. Must be available to work any 8-hour shift. Outdoor work required.
