Position Summary:

The NCE Associate Director of Health and Safety works closely with college and campus administration and department faculty, staff, and student organizations to ensure the safe operation and regulatory compliance of all NCE research labs, teaching labs, and facilities. In coordination with campus safety offices, the Associate Director develops and disseminates policies and procedures designed to increase the safety, well-being, and compliance of NCE facilities with local, state, and federal regulations about environmental protection or occupational health and safety.

The Associate Director performs and oversees inspections, provides training, and assesses the operation of facilities and staffing to ensure safe and compliant operations. S/he maintains contacts with regulatory agencies, law enforcement, fire prevention, and medical operations in the vicinity of NJIT for assistance during incidents and emergencies.

The Associate Director provides training, develops forms, and operates reporting mechanisms. and prepares and presents reports and proposals concerning safety and maintenance.

Essential Functions:

  • Understand and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations pertaining to environmental protection and occupational health and safety.

  • Develop, disseminate, support, and promote Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA) policies.

  • Conduct scheduled, random, and rotating inspections of labs, classrooms, and other facilities to ensure compliance with OSHA policies and coordinate responses to instances of non-compliance.

  • Investigate incidents or accidents, gather and analyze statistics, and implement changes for future incident prevention.

  • Organize training, simulations, and exercises concerning OSHA policies for all relevant NCE entities.

  • Prepare and submit accident reports per applicable regulatory requirements.

  • Maintain an inventory of devices, tools, and materials needed for regulatory compliance.

  • Serve as Chairperson of the NCE Laboratory Safety Committee.

  • Oversee the creation and maintenance of department personnel training and compliance records.

  • Coordinate preparation of RFPs for external safety audits.

  • Assist large laboratories and centers in developing health and safety manuals.

  • Partners with EHS leaders to provide leadership, coaching, and/or mentoring to departmental lab managers.

  • Enter purchase requisitions into procurement systems following university policies.

Additional Functions:

  • Depending on workload, the Associate Director may be assigned to teach up to two courses per semester.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the field's policies, procedures, and practices.

  • Other pertinent duties as assigned.

Prerequisite Qualifications:

  • A baccalaureate degree in engineering or science.

  • Work experience of at least 3 years in Higher Education.

  • At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Master of Science degree in engineering or science.

  • Work experience in environmental health and safety.
