The Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center (HICCC) at Columbia University Irving Medical Center provides outstanding Biomedical Research Cores. The HICCC houses 12 core facilities or shared resources that provide services essential to basic and translational cancer research, to which the applicant will have continued full access on a 24/7 basis.
Dr. Joel T. Gabre is a Gastroenterologist and GI Cancer Genetics Specialist and investigator at Columbia University Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center. The Gabre Lab studies all aspects of gastroesophageal biology from development to cancer. The Gabre Lab also generates patient-derived 2D and 3D esophageal, gastric, and lung cancer organoids that can replicate the morphological and genetic features of the cancer tissue from which they were derived. A Staff Associate will assist with the logistics of the identification of patients, procurement of tissue samples, and derivation and characterization of these 3D organoids from patient samples.

- Works within guidelines to carry out assigned duties in the design of apparatus, the adaptation of relevant technology to the needs of a project, the conduct of specific experiments, and the analysis of data.

- Ability to operate and maintain equipment, computers, software programs, and research tools in support of the project.
Communication
- Document routine and experimental protocols, using batch records or similar systems.
- Share information and dates with colleagues and supervisors.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a specific research field.
Other Requirements
- Some experience in cell culture and molecular biology techniques is expected but not required.
- Willingness to work with mice
- Strong experimental and analytical skills
- Strong organizational and time management skills, willingness to be flexible with work hours, occasionally
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, verbal and written
- Exceptional attention to detail and meticulous record keeping
- Experience in staff training and transfer of knowledge
- Ability to work independently and also collaborate with leadership to implement novel techniques and methods and to support the overall impact and outreach of the core.
