Organization Overview

The Laboratory of Human Genetics of Infectious Diseases studies the human genetic and immunological determinants of life-threatening infectious diseases. It aims to understand why some children and adults develop a life-threatening or lethal illness in the course of primary infection, while most people exposed to the same microbe remain unharmed. Our research covers five major themes: brain and lung viruses, skin viruses, autoantibodies to cytokines, mycobacterial diseases, and computational genetics. These topics are investigated by focused research teams. Our lab is proudly multicultural and diverse, bringing together a rich array of perspectives and experiences. We cultivate an inclusive and supportive environment. With several ongoing research studies, multiple international collaborations, and through the organization of various conferences, our lab members are active leaders and engaged participants within biomedical research.

Overview

The Research Assistant will assist a research team studying the genetic determinants of unusual mucocutaneous viral infections in humans. The team focuses on herpesviruses (HSV-1, VZV), human papillomaviruses (HPVs), and oncoviruses. Responsibilities include: isolation of plasma/serum, PBMCs, and DNA; performing routine viral infection assays in human fibroblasts; providing technical support to specific projects related to severe clinical phenotypes resulting from skin or mucosal viral infection of the team.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

• Performs routine molecular biology assays: cloning, mutagenesis, RNA/DNA extractions

• Performs biochemical and functional assays: transfection, CRISPR-Cas9 editing, western blot, luciferase assays

• Performs leukocyte adhesion and migration assays

• Assists with establishing skin-on-chip models and performs confocal and video-microscopy

• Assists in the design of experiments, techniques, and protocols; Actively participates in weekly group and lab meetings, communicating results, sharing ideas, and discussing research methodologies

Qualifications

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Cell Biology, Biochemistry or related field

• Some laboratory experience is required, which could include internships or previous job experience in a research laboratory setting.

• Strong understanding of cell biology fundamentals.

• Self-motivated, solution oriented, and able to work in an innovative and dynamic scientific environment.

Preferred:

• Master’s degree in Cell Biology, Biochemistry or related field is preferred.

• More extensive laboratory experience is preferred.

• Experience with specific tools and technologies relevant to the research being conducted (e.g., confocal microscopy, primary cell cultures, molecular biology) is a plus.

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on various factors, including but not limited to organizational budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The hiring range provided represents The Rockefeller University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
