Position Summary

Join our team as a Lead Nurse Practitioner and play a vital role in overseeing nursing operations to ensure exceptional patient care delivery. The Department of Urology at Columbia University Medical Center is seeking a Nurse Practitioner leader to manage our thriving clinical team consisting of 6 Advanced Practice Providers (NP and PA) and 6 nurses (RN and LPN). The Lead Nurse Practitioner develops, implements, and monitors programs, policies, and procedures to ensure the highest quality of patient care and satisfaction through operational efficiency, best utilization, and productivity of staff. The practice serves patients with a variety of urological disorders. The position will include 0% administrative and 60% clinical responsibilities. The Lead Nurse Practitioner will work in partnership with all clinical managers and physicians with the support and direction of the Medical Director and Vice Chairs.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice and nursing services.
  • Assign responsibilities and duties as related to appropriate licensure and experience of staff member.
  • Analyze internal and external data and information to identify opportunities for improving services, patient outcomes, and patient satisfaction.
  • Evaluate staff performance based on professional practice standards and development.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and implement corrective actions to promote a productive and healthy work environment.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and direction to clinical staff.
  • Collaborate with nursing staff at all levels.
  • Ensure all clinical staff maintain the required training skills.
  • Offer and develop professional development opportunities for clinical nursing staff.
  • Ensure all clinical staff maintain standards of professionalism as set forth by the department leadership and Columbia Doctors.
  • Create a work schedule for the nursing staff and enforce adherence to departmental policies regarding absence and early dismissal.
  • Assess patient status by obtaining health history through patient/family interviews and chart reviews.
  • Assess presenting illness, risk factors, and family history, psychosocial situation, and cultural factors; and perform appropriate physical examination.
  • Assist with ordering appropriate laboratory diagnostic and perform other screening tests.
  • Seek other information as needed, including consultation with physicians and other clinicians for evaluation of illness.
  • Integrate data to determine diagnosis and therapeutic plan, including identification of any health risks.
  • Develop and implement treatment plans by prescribing/dispensing medications and/or injections in compliance with medical practice guidelines and state laws.
  • Provide guidance to patients/family regarding medications and treatments.
  • Educate patients regarding health promotion/illness prevention.
  • Provide recommendations to appropriate community resources to meet patient/family needs.
  • Assist with prescriptions, prior authorizations, disability paperwork, and returning phone calls. This will include cross-coverage with other APPs/MDs during vacations.
  • Document, code, and bill as appropriate.
  • Practice locations will include the main CUIMC campus, along with the possibility of working in satellite sites in Westchester and Manhattan.
  • Other related duties as requested/required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Advanced Practice Registered Nurse is either a Master's or Doctorate prepared as a Nurse Practitioner, as well as board certified with ANCC or AANP. The Nurse Practitioner must have a valid license as a Registered Nurse and as a Nurse Practitioner, plus 5 years of nursing or related experience.

Other Requirements

  • Nursing: RN License and NP License in NYS; ANCC Board Certification
  • BLS Certification.
  • Current or Eligible for NYS DEA License.
