LOCATION : 2 Broadway New York, NY 10004

HOURS OF WORK : 9:00am - 5:30pm (7 1/2 hours/day)

This position is eligible for telework which is currently one day per week. New hires are eligible to apply 30 days after their effective date of hire.

SUMMARY :

Under the direction of the Mapping Manager, the map designer will be responsible for helping to research, create and maintain the MTA’s transit maps, ensuring they are easy to understand, navigate and help address accessibility standards. This role will also create and develop graphic materials for marketing and corporate communications within MTA headquarters and its operating agencies in print and digital formats.

The map design team at the MTA is a dynamic and innovative group dedicated to solving complex transit system challenges through a combination of art, technology, and communication skills. The team creates and maintains a system of maps, wayfinding, and other information assets for all MTA operations, directly impacting the daily experiences of millions of transit users.

RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Participate in all aspects of map design, from conceptualization to final delivery.

  • Maintain and enhance MTA’s primary map style guide.

  • Engage in user research and customer conversations to stay attuned to user needs.

  • Provide limited and occasional recommendations for the improvement of internal tools related to transit design.

  • Work with cross-functional teams to provide maps rendered to proper digital specifications.

  • Assist enterprise customers with custom base maps and unique map requirements.

  • Other duties as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong visual and graphic design skills, including expertise with color, typography, and page layout.

  • Working knowledge of digital and print production.

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite platforms.

  • Meticulous attention to detail and good organizational and file management skills.

  • Capability to create rendered map mock-ups.

  • Adaptability in a fast-paced environment.

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.

  • Willingness to both learn and teach.

  • Self-discipline to manage your schedule in alignment with the team’s needs.

  • A genuine passion for transportation system maps.

  • Creativity and ability to think outside of the box.

  • May need to work outside of normal work hours (i.e., evenings and weekends).

  • Travel may be required to other MTA locations or other external sites.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :

    REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, geographic information systems (GIS), Urban Planning or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience from an accredited college may be considered in lieu of a degree.

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in graphic design or mapping/wayfinding.

    PREFERRED:

  • Master’s degree in a related field.

  • 4+ years of related experience.

  • Knowledge of ArcGIS and Python scripting is a plus, with the opportunity to learn.

  • Familiarity with the MTA’s policies and procedures.
