New York University [EOI] Postdoctoral Associate at NYU/Courant/Center for Atmosphere Ocean Science in New York, New York

Seeking Expression of Interest from junior scientists with expertise in physical oceanography, data-driven methods, and high-resolution numerical modeling. This opportunity is for a postdoctoral position at New York University, supervised by Shafer Smith (Professor of Mathematics and Atmosphere Ocean Science at the Courant Institute).

The postdoc will join a small multi-institutional team that includes Spencer Jones (professor of Oceanography at Texas A&M University) and Dhruv Balwada (research professor at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory), conducting research as part of the NASA Surface Water and Ocean Topography (https://swot.jpl.nasa.gov/) (SWOT) Science Team. The SWOT satellite, launched in December 2022, is providing new swath-based altimetric observations of sea surface height. The overall goal of our project is to develop new data-driven methods, leveraging ocean dynamics together with machine learning, for inferring subsurface ocean transport from SWOT data. The postdoctoral scientist will use high-resolution global numerical simulations (MITgcm LLC4320) to develop and test methods for reconstructing lateral and vertical transport from SSH, and then apply these methods to the real SWOT data post-launch.

The position is for 2 years, with the possibility of renewal based on performance and availability of funding. The position is available immediately.

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $66,000 to $74,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a PhD in geosciences, physics, applied mathematics, engineering, or a related field at the time of the appointment

  • A record of relevant publications in the peer-reviewed scientific literature appropriate to their career stage

  • Strong background in ocean physics and geophysical fluid dynamics

  • Strong interest or background in the application of machine learning to physics problems

  • Excellent scientific programming skills, with fluency in scientific python (e.g. Xarray and Dask)

  • Experience analyzing data from high-resolution numerical simulations or satellites is strongly preferred.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.

Application Instructions

For full consideration, applicants should submit the following via Interfolio:

  • A Curriculum Vitae with a list of publications,

  • A cover letter (no more than 2 pages) detailing their research experience, how their interests would fit the project advertise, their career plans, and available start date,

  • The names of 3 references who are willing to send a letter of recommendation.

The position will remain open until filled, but review of applications will begin June 1, 2024.
