Job Description
The Department of City Planning (DCP) is excited to provide a summer experience that provides local undergraduates with the skills and tools to engage in public outreach to achieve neighborhood and city-wide planning goals.
The program is open to students interested in public service, who are seeking insights into the skills and tools needed to support community advocacy and curious about entering career fields related to city planning, such as information technology, environmental sciences, law, public policy and many more.
Participation in the program will provide experience that may lead to graduate schools or entry-level positions with NYC Department of City Planning or other agencies. In addition to on-the-job training, the program will offer an Agency orientation, a Public Engagement Boot Camp and opportunities to put these skills into action to support the Agency’s summer outreach initiatives. Additionally, the Agency will host Intern Networking activities and site visits to see how the NYC Department of City Planning is working with communities in all five boroughs.
There are several job postings with descriptions of each Division’s summer outreach efforts. Interns should apply to all Divisions they are interested in working. All interns will participate in the joint activities hosted by the Agency, but will report to and work in the Division office that selects them to participate in their summer initiatives.

As of June 2025, the prospective intern must be a student matriculated in an accredited undergraduate degree program in the NYC region and have completed their junior year and beginning their senior year of studies. NOTE: Appointment to this title/role is only valid for the duration of the internship program. All applicants must be available to work in-office for the full duration (10 weeks) of the program.
Former interns and employees are not eligible to apply for this Summer Internship Program.

The Department of City Planning (DCP), through extensive community engagement, plans for the strategic growth and development of the City, develops citywide and neighborhood land use policies and zoning regulations, and shares its perspectives on growth and community needs with NYC city agencies in collaboration with the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).
DCP has an expansive work program focused on supporting inclusive planning initiatives to engage communities to promote sustainability, housing access and economic opportunity through informed decision-making. DCP is a small agency of approximately 300 professionals, with offices in all five boroughs, serving the future goals of a city of nearly 9 million people.
About the Bronx Borough Office

The Bronx Office has a varied and dynamic work program focused on ensuring the borough has great neighborhoods that include affordable housing, vibrant commercial and institutional centers, transit-oriented development and high-quality public realm. The Bronx Office is responsible for a wide range of planning and urban design activities including developing borough-wide and local plans focused on affordable housing, economic development and the public realm; reviewing and managing land use applications subject to the Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP); leading community engagement; providing technical and policy guidance on all land use and zoning matters related to the City Planning Commission, local community boards and the public at large.
The Bronx Borough Office is seeking a Summer Intern to work with the borough’s neighborhood planning teams. The role will center qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis. It includes, but is not limited to, land use surveys, demographic data analysis, and historical research. In addition, diagraming, mapping, and 3D modeling skills and experience with public engagement are desired, but not required. BXO wants to present local stakeholders with information on existing conditions and potential development in their neighborhoods by producing detailed and comprehensive neighborhood plans.

As of June of the Program year the prospective interne must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).
NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program, June - August each year.
