The anticipated salary range for this role is between $190,000.00 and $225,000.00. The specific salary offered to an applicant will be based on their individual qualifications, experiences, and an analysis of the current compensation paid in their geography and the market for similar roles at the time of hire. The role may also be eligible for an annual discretionary incentive award. In addition to cash compensation, SMBC offers a competitive portfolio of benefits to its employees.

Role Description

SMBC is seeking an experienced Audit Director with a minimum of 10 years’ experience in the banking and finance industry to lead audit coverage of Credit Risk Management and Enterprise Risk related activities within the Internal Audit Department.

Reporting to the Risk Audit Team Lead, the Audit Director will be responsible for (1) overseeing various large scale complicated audits with minimal supervision by the Team Lead, ensuring work is performed in accordance with IIA standards and IAD policies and procedures (2) conducting audits requiring risk management related subject matter expertise, and (3) supporting the Risk Audit Team Lead in the execution of their duties.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Support IAD Management team in planning, development, implementation, and maintenance of an internal audit program that addresses management of financial risks across the Americas Division.

  • Manage a team of auditors to execute high quality reviews of Credit, Counterparty Credit, and Enterprise Risk related processes and controls within a prescribed timeframe.

  • Directs and Oversees audits as an Auditor in Charge (AIC) in accordance with the Bank's policies and procedures, with limited supervision and support by the team leader.

  • Provide support, coaching, and feedback to audit team which may include internal or co-sourced internal audit professionals.

  • Effectively communicate with stakeholder and audit senior management to clearly articulate audit strategy, testing results and corrective measures.

  • As needed, assist with the delivery and execution of IAD's broader audit plan and assurance responsibilities (e.g., non-financial risk and lending related activities).

  • Deputize the Risk Team Lead as needed to lead audit activities or represent the department in governance and stakeholder meetings.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Support the Risk Team Lead in the preparation of management reports and regulator presentations.

  • Oversee quarterly and annual continuous monitoring / risk assessment process to identify business trends and emerging risks, and when necessary, propose updates to the audit plan to reflect them.

  • As needed, assist with special projects related to business process improvements or departmental strategic initiatives.

  • Track and validate closure of issues raised by the department and regulators.

  • Develop, promote, and maintain a collaborative and strong working relationship with AD business heads, external auditors, and regulators.

  • Recommends continuous improvement practices based on new regulatory requirements.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Minimum of 10 years of risk/audit experience in the banking and finance industry.

  • Expert knowledge of credit, counterparty credit, enterprise risk, and banking / capital markets products.

  • Expert knowledge of risk related regulatory expectations (Leveraged Lending (SR 13-3), Counterparty Credit Risk (SR 11-10), Stress Testing (SR 12-7), Risk Management Program (CFR 23.600), etc.).

  • Expert knowledge of audit techniques, risk and internal controls assessment, and workpaper standards.

  • Strong strategic thinking skills including the ability to identify and assess emerging risks.

  • Ability to act as trusted advisor to senior management using discretion and sound judgment in identifying, analyzing, and reporting problems.

  • Excellent communication, presentation and professional skills including the ability to interact effectively at all levels within the organization.

  • Ability to lead teams; strong leadership skills; able to gain respect and cooperation

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. Advanced degree preferred
