Role description:

Arcadis seeks an Assistant Safety Director to join the team in New York to assist in the development, implementation, and enforcement of safety policies, procedures, and programs to ensure a safe working environment for all personnel involved in the construction project. This role involves collaborating with project management, field personnel, and subcontractors to promote a strong safety culture, identify potential hazards, and implement corrective actions to prevent accidents and injuries.

Role accountabilities:

  • Assist in the development, implementation, and maintenance of a comprehensive safety program specific to the heavy civil tunnel project.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations and standards.
  • Conduct regular safety audits and inspections to identify and address potential hazards.
  • Collaborate with the Safety Director to develop and deliver safety training programs for all project personnel.
  • Ensure that all workers are adequately trained on safety procedures, equipment usage, and emergency response protocols.
  • Conduct toolbox talks, safety meetings, and workshops to reinforce safety awareness.
  • Assist in the investigation of accidents, incidents, and near-misses to determine root causes and develop corrective action plans.
  • Maintain accurate records of all safety incidents, ensuring timely reporting and analysis.
  • Monitor and enforce adherence to safety policies and regulations by all project personnel.
  • Work closely with subcontractors to ensure their safety programs align with project requirements.
  • Collaborate with regulatory agencies during inspections and audits.
  • Develop and implement emergency response plans for various potential scenarios.
  • Conduct regular drills and exercises to ensure effective responses to emergencies.
  • Communicate safety expectations, updates, and best practices to all project team members.
  • Foster open communication channels for reporting safety concerns and suggestions.
  • Ensure the availability and proper use of safety equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Conduct regular inspections of safety equipment to verify functionality and compliance.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in safety processes and procedures.
  • Implement initiatives to enhance the overall safety performance of the project.

Qualifications & Experience:
  • 10 Years qualify oversight on heavy civil construction projects.
  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, or a related field.

Key Skills and Abilities:
  • Relevant safety certifications (e.g., CSP, CHST) are a plus.
  • Previous experience in heavy civil construction, tunneling, or similar projects.
  • In-depth knowledge of OSHA regulations and other relevant safety standards.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
