Overview

The Manager, First Line Operational Risk and New Initiatives contributes to the overall success of the U.S. New Initiative Approval (NIA) process ensuring specific individual goals, plans, initiatives are executed / delivered in support of the team’s business strategies and objectives. This Manager ensures that all activities conducted are compliant with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures. This position contributes to the overall success of the SBUS control framework by working closely with the first line of defense/1A business as well as second line of defense to ensure activities conducted are compliant with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures with a focus on New Initiatives. You will also provide 1st line of defense support in managing non-financial risks inherent to new products and services offered by Scotiabank US capital markets trading businesses. This position will assist in implementing industry best practices and developing regulatory requirements related to Operational Risk and U.S. NIA processes.

What You’ll Do

  • Champions a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems, and knowledge.

  • Assists the business in coordinating and performing timely review of new transactions, products, and/or methods for effectuating transactions in accordance with Scotiabank’s U.S. NIA process.

  • Works to identify efficiencies in the U.S. NIA process from submission of screeners through to post approval implementation reviews.

  • Engages on all aspects of the U.S. NIA process, including:

  • Work with the business to assess screener and new initiatives

  • Work closely with Enterprise Risk Management to ensure efficient review of all screener/NIAs

  • Organize and lead working group meetings for all in-scope initiatives

  • Follow-up with Control & Support Functions on completion of independent risk assessments

  • Prepare NIA materials for, and present at, numerous management committees

  • Prepare NIA agendas for monthly and ad hoc U.S. NIA Committees

  • Prepare meeting minutes

  • Ensure the completion of outstanding post implementation reviews for previously approved NIAs

  • Serve as point of contact and work independently with stakeholders

  • Act as delegated backup for the current U.S. Internal Control team lead for NIA process.

  • Liaise with global teams on new global products, services and initiatives that impact the U.S.

  • Liaise with Internal Control and GOR teams in Toronto on process changes at the enterprise level and work across all regions within GBM to develop a consistent NIA framework.

  • Communicate effectively with senior capital markets personnel on detailed issues in business.

  • Coordinate in the collation of information and execution required by regulators and internal audit to facilitate the latter’s examinations/reviews.

  • Assist in the development of training materials to business line (1A) personnel on risks, controls and procedures related to U.S. NIA process.

  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.

  • Actively pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.

What You’ll Bring

  • 3-5 years’ experience of capital markets front office environment or as part of a control & support function team

  • Understanding of FICC, Equities and CIB products and services

  • Knowledge of capital markers risks and controls
