Vanderbilt University Application Developer; Mass Spectrometry in Nashville, Tennessee

Job Description

The Application Developer works with interdisciplinary teams to automate workflows and analyze data from proteomics, metabolomics, lipidomics, and transcriptomics experiments. The Application Developer is responsible for the implementation of web applications, web services, and integrations with internal and external software components using industry best practices. This person will develop and modify software under occasional guidance. They will be responsible for designing, coding, performing benchmark testing, debugging and documenting software utilized in scientific research. The application developer will independently implement small projects or components of large projects. This position will be directed by Dr. Spraggins of the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology and the Mass Spectrometry Research Center. The application developer will be expected to support the research goals for the Spraggins research group and assist with tools that will be developed to assist the various Cores of the MSRC.

Duties and Responsibilities

Software design, implementation, analysis, maintenance or experimentation, as directed by team leader.

  • Assist with modeling and analysis of multiomic and/or imaging data.

  • Assist researchers and/or System Architect with the development and maintenance of discipline-specific software systems and/or engineering tools to support project and research goals.

  • Adhere to existing and develop/recommend new technical standards.

  • Maintain familiarity with and expertise in emerging technologies and techniques related to project and research goals.

Effective delivery of technical progress reports/presentations in written and oral forms to project research staff and faculty.

  • Communicate regularly, effectively, and professionally with researchers and/or System Architect and research team.

  • Share research knowledge, product, and research processes with Principal Investigator and/or System Architect and research team.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree is necessary.

  • 1 year of experience or the equivalent is necessary.

  • Skills in basic software system development, data modeling and/or systems engineering are necessary.

  • Ability to design, implement, test, document, and maintain software is necessary.

  • Practical knowledge of Linux commands and shell basics is preferred.

  • Practical knowledge of Windows and Shell basics is preferred.

  • Practical knowledge of software development tools and programming languages as needed by project, e.g., Ruby, Python, R, Matlab, JavaScript, Golang, C, C++, .NET, PostgreSQL among others is preferred.

  • Knowledge and experience working with genomics or proteomics data sets is preferred.
