The Cloud AI & Advanced Systems Engineering (CAASE) is responsible for expanding Microsoft’s Cloud Infrastructure to enable Microsoft’s mission to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. The CAASE team is instrumental in delivering world class and innovative hardware at scale to ensure a high-quality experience to the millions of Microsoft Azure customers.

We are hiring Principal Hardware Systems Engineer.

As a Principal Hardware Systems Engineer, you will be the technical voice of the program collaborating across several functional teams and customers within Microsoft. You will be leading the bring-up, integration strategy, and system evaluation as well as influencing hardware architecture to deliver the highest quality solution to the customer. Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with architecture, silicon engineering, firmware, hardware design, hardware validation, operating systems, manufacturing, and customer teams to build state-of-the-art compute, storage, networking, and accelerator hardware solutions.

  • Own the integration and enablement of new interfaces and subsystems, analyze power efficiency, debug integration issues, and provide recommendations.

  • Define system behavior and concept of operations for the platform to ensure compatibility with Microsoft Azure datacenter software, serviceability, telemetry, and customer expectations.

  • Perform NUDD (new, unique, different and difficult) technology and feature analysis and provide risk assessment and mitigations.

  • Drive technical requirements and ensure the solution is flexible and scalable across the full (HW/FW/SW) stack.

  • Enable platform and solution level discussions, influencing architecture of the product, and delivering to product goals across quality, reliability, and performance.

  • Collaborate with internal, external, and open-source partners to onboard innovative technologies in a seamless manner.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years of technical engineering experience.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of PCIe protocol (Gen3, Gen4, Gen5, Gen6), PCIe Host systems, PCIe validation and Bring-up, in-depth understand of all layers of PCIe protocol

  • 8+ years of PCIe bring up and development for accelerators or other end points

  • 8+ years of PCIe debug & validation experience across , HW, FW, Drivers & OS

  • 8+ years of experience in evaluating performance on PCIe subsystem

  • Knowledge of high-volume silicon (SoCs, GPUs, or FPGAs), compute, storage, and/or networking design, manufacturing, and deployment.

  • Experience with highspeed interfaces such as PCIe, DDR, and ethernet.

  • In-depth experience with operating systems (Windows and/or Linux), system firmware (BIOS, BMC), and system security (hardware and software).

  • Knowledge about datacenters & operations at scale.

  • Experience managing hardware programs through the entire product lifecycle.

Hardware Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 - $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 - $282,200 per year.
