Position Summary:

The Chief of Police for Central Michigan University plans, directs, coordinates, and implements a comprehensive CMU policing program in compliance with all applicable laws, rules, and regulations to include a comprehensive community policing program, a comprehensive crime prevention program, enforcement of all laws and local ordinances, response to emergencies, investigation of complaints, security of the campus, and traffic and parking controls. This position also leads campus emergency management and ensures public safety and the security of people and property for the university community. This position is responsible for coordinating with local and state law enforcement agencies. 

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree, or equivalent policing experience as a Lieutenant or Captain for at least four years. Four years of law enforcement-related administrative experience, with proven leadership. Ten years of policing experience with progressive and diverse experience in law enforcement, public safety, and security. Experience in the application of incident command. Certification from the Michigan Commission of Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES ) or the ability to obtain MCOLES certification within 90 days of employment. Possession of a valid driver's license. Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise law enforcement operations. Demonstrated knowledge of police enforcement laws and safety regulations. Demonstrated knowledge of all aspects of law enforcement, traffic and parking management, security and crime prevention techniques. Demonstrated understanding of pre-service and in-service training of police officers, including training course objectives and requirements for admission to a certified academy. Demonstrated positive interpersonal skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation. 

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in criminal justice or a related field. Demonstrated knowledge of federal and state compliance as it relates to campus policing. Experience with the implementation of Law Enforcement Accreditation Standards. Experience working in a union work environment. Certificate from a recognized school of Command and Staff. 

Duties & Responsibilities:

Leadership of Police and Policing: Leads, develops, and maintains a motivated and highly effective university police force. Directs all police activities, utilizing modern approaches and technology for conducting policing. Develops and implements creative methods to achieve a campus community policing philosophy. Develops and implements programs for interactive engagement with students, parents, faculty, staff, and surrounding communities to build confidence, trust, and a positive police relationship.

Planning, Procedures, and Processes: Plans, develops, and implements policing policies and procedures for crime prevention, law enforcement, and safety and security services for Central Michigan University. Develops and implements short and long-range strategic plans, goals, and objectives for the CMU Police Department. Develops or revises departmental policies and procedures, maintaining relevant plans to reflect changes in laws and law enforcement. Implements and maintains plans for compliance with state and federal regulations. Maintains liaison with state, local, and tribal police agencies.

Recruitment and Management: Directs the recruitment, selection, training, evaluation, and discipline of law enforcement officers as well as administrative, managerial, and support staff. Develops programs to recruit a diverse population of police officers with
