Overview

The Department of Environmental Conservation\'s Wastewater Management Program seeks a highly motivated individual to serve in its Industrial Pretreatment Section. This position will work with breweries, dairies, landfills, and other industries to protect VT\'s municipal wastewater treatment facilities (WWTFs) and surface waters from harmful wastewater discharges.

\ \ The core job duties of this position include wastewater permitting, inspecting, and compliance and enforcement work with VT businesses. This position will also work with municipalities to identify sources of wastewater pollutants and develop limits to protect WWTF capacity. This position will enjoy field work, have opportunities to provide pollution prevention technical assistance, and do cutting-edge work with emerging contaminants, such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Additional projects may be available based on applicable skills and interests.

\ \ This dynamic position often requires balancing long-term projects with urgent situations. Successful candidates will be self-motivated and effective time managers in order to balance writing permits, conducting inspections, reviewing plans, and performing compliance oversight for approximately 25 facilities. DEC seeks candidates that have working knowledge of environmental law, aquatic chemistry/biology, municipal and industrial wastewater treatment processes and lab practices, and be a collegial and supportive team member. The ability to interact professionally with business owners, WWTF operators, municipal governments, collaborators and stakeholders, and the general public is required.

Candidates should have strong computer skills, the ability to work independently and as part of a team, and experience balancing multiple projects and shifting priorities. Candidates with Engineering backgrounds or regulatory experience are highly preferred. The Agency of Natural Resources and Wastewater Management Program has an employee-friendly telework policy, requiring staff (once trained) to work from the office as little as a few days a month. The rest of the days, staff are welcome to work in the office as they wish or work from their productive home offices.

As of July 14, 2024 the step 1 rate for pay grade 24 will be \$28.16 per hour.

Environmental Factors

Duties are largely performed in an office setting; however, some field travel may be necessary for which private means of transportation must be available. Field work may involve exposure to chemicals, gases, hazardous liquid and solid waste, and construction sites during all weather conditions; and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Some work outside of regular working hours, including attendance at public meetings, may be required. Strong differences of opinion may be encountered on a regular basis.
