General Information & Responsibilities

The Science Lab Assistant is responsible for assisting the Science Lab Coordinator within the Natural Sciences and Engineering Department. Responsibilities include assisting with: laboratory preparation, cleaning and organization of laboratory spaces, laboratory/equipment maintenance, and chemical/hazardous waste management.

Would work 20 hours/ week at the Quad Cities Campus in Moline, IL.

Description of Duties

DESCRIPTION OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

a. Assist with preparing and removing departmental lab setups based on instructional needs.

b. Cleans and maintains departmental laboratories, stock rooms, prep rooms, grow room and classrooms.

c. Assist with keeping updated and current, remove outdated, and dispose of unused departmental media, equipment, stocks and supplies.

d. Assist with maintaining appropriate hazardous waste records and reports.

e. Assist with safety and compliance protocols, procedures, and record keeping.

f. Stays up to date on new policies and procedures in academic laboratory settings.

DESCRIPTION OF OTHER DUTIES:

a. Provides general assistance to the Science Lab Coordinator and departmental faculty.

b. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

a. Works directly and cooperatively with Science Lab Coordinator, Natural Science and Engineering faculty, Department Chair, and Dean of Liberal Arts & Sciences.

b. Works directly and cooperatively with student workers / work study students.

c. Works directly and cooperatively with governing bodies (Risk Management) concerning safety, environmental, and chemical/hazardous waste.

d. Works cooperatively with Black Hawk College faculty, staff, students, and visitors.

e. Works directly with vendors as needed.

Education & Experience

(To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.)

a. Associate’s degree preferred, high school diploma or equivalent required.

b. Basic knowledge of laboratory operations, procedures, and safety are desired.

c. Basic knowledge of computer hardware and software desired.

d. Good written and oral communication skills required.

e. Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks required.

f. Ability to work with confidential information required.

g. Ability to work well with all types of people and honor diversity principles required.
