Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Supervisor, Patient Flow (RN) - Evenings.
In this role, the successful candidate provides leadership for NYU Langone Hospital Long Island Patient Flow department, supervising all aspects of patient flow, in collaboration with department leadership and staff, Comprehensive Transfer Center (CTC) leadership and staff, as well as the interdisciplinary care teams. Supervises the performance and productivity of Bed Utilization Representatives while on-site and oversees all patient placement activity for the NYU Langone Hospital Long Island campus.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provides leadership for the department by assessing, implementing, and evaluating daily operations and processes within the Patient Flow department.
  • Supervises Patient Flow staff to ensure strong communication between all team members, external stakeholders and hospital leaders. Ensures a collaborative interdisciplinary approach to achieve optimal outcomes and further goals of the department.
  • Assumes responsibility for department operations during shift, collaborating with key stakeholders, troubleshooting placement issues, and managing any staff call outs and scheduling.
  • Oversees patient placement functions in a responsive manner, responding to all stakeholders with the aid of the Electronic Health Record (EHR), approved clinical protocols, and established patient care protocols and healthcare information.
  • Executes placement strategies as directed by department and hospital leadership. Monitors hospital census and executes Hospital Surge Plan as needed to reduce boarding and minimize bed crisis through effective planning. Ensures staff complete placements in a timely manner and in accordance with strategic direction provided by department and hospital leadership.
  • Collaborates with key stakeholders, including department leadership, Transfer Center, Physicians, Nursing, and Nurse Administrators to ensure safe and timely patient throughput and progression. Acts as liaison between Patient Flow team and key stakeholder departments, including Hospitality, Facilities, etc.
  • Partners with department leadership, CTC leadership, and CTC Medical Directors to prioritize patient placements based on guidance provided, including assessment of pending external transfers, patients waiting for beds in the emergency department, and other portals of entry.
  • Serves as a role model for all staff by incorporating expertise, critical thinking and related experience in all aspects of the bed placement process.
  • Supervises and maintains staff productivity and serves as staff resource for policy and procedure questions and interpretation.
  • Communicates regularly with Patient Flow Director regarding matters of staff performance. Participates in the development and implementation of staff improvement plans. Orients and trains new staff. Identifies staff educational needs and facilitates in-service training sessions when needed. Provides continuous training for existing employees and ensures all department changes are communicated effectively.
  • Demonstrates effective personnel management including work assignments, performance assessment, counseling, and disciplinary actions taken.
  • Models excellent customer relationship skills including telephone and personal contact with all key stakeholders (i.e. Hospital Leadership, CTC Medical Directors, Bed Utilization Coordinators & Representatives, physicians and their office staff, callers, etc.)
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a Bachelors Degree
5-7 relevant work experience in healthcare or hospital setting
Demonstrates understanding of EHR and all bed management functions
Strong problem-solving, multi-tasking, analytical/critical thinking and conflict resolution skills
Ability to establish and maintain collaborative and effective working relationships
Excellent telephone manner and use of professional vocabulary
Ability to function calmly in a stressful situations and fast-paced environment
Positive, enthusiastic, customer-service oriented personality
Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with Epic workflows and/or bed planning features

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $112,360.00 - $158,986.57 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
