Job Description

The IFF Pharma Solutions business produces and sells high-performance cellulose derivatives, alginates and related polymers used for formulations across a broad variety of applications in the Pharmaceuticals, Food, and Industrial Specialties and Personal Care markets. The portfolio is a highly profitable part of the company and has shown significant value growth over the last several years.

Within IFF’s Pharma Solutions business Technology and Process expertise is a strategic area of focus and can deliver a competitive advantage.

As a Process Research Engineer I, you will work across the functions (R&D and Process R&D, Innovation, Regulatory, Manufacturing and Technology, Marketing) to support and execute Pharma Solutions innovation, technology development and asset strategy. In this role, you will focus on Methocel, Ethocel, and Polyox product lines for food and nutrition applications within the Process R&D team along with other technical research to support the team’s overall workload.

Responsibilities:

The Process Research Engineer / Technologist will be the solids processing expert for new and current products and processes in the area of chemically modified cellulose and polysaccharides by:

  • Applying engineering and chemical research to generate new process capabilities with improved cost, quality, and/or throughput.

  • Defining optimal process conditions for producing products focused in the application area of food and beverages, but also including pharmaceutical excipients, personal care products, and industrial additives.

  • Development and documentation of process technology information.

  • Lead multiple projects, design experiments, and deliver high quality data.

  • Troubleshooting of commercial manufacturing processes.

  • Scale-up of new process technology by conducting trials at lab, pilot, and production scale.

  • Applying and developing analytical techniques to support the evaluation of processes including key performance attributes, product defects, and by-products.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelors degree or applied Associates degree with professional experience in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or comparable experience (including military) preferred.

  • Proven track record of research supporting product or process development and demonstrated good scientific skills at laboratory, pilot, and production scale including hands-on experience.

  • Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot tools and equipment.

  • Capable of performing independently with little supervision to carry complex tasks forward, and design, execute, analyze and summarize laboratory and pilot scale trials.

  • Strong data analysis and technical documentation skills are required.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Ability to speak fluently in English.

The Pharma Solutions business will be taking on its next chapter of growth as a trusted partner for the pharmaceutical industry with the announcement to sell Pharma Solutions to Roquette. This move will position Pharma Solutions to expand its industry leadership through continued investment in innovation to meet the evolving needs of pharmaceutical manufacturers and developers worldwide.

The sale is presently expected to close in the first half of 2025, pending regulatory approvals and other closing conditions. The Pharma Solutions business unit will remain a part of IFF until close and, at such time, it will transition to Roquette.
