The AWS Networking team develops and operates the network platform for all of Amazon including e-commerce products and cloud computing solutions. This platform is industry-leading for its efficiency, throughput and reliability, and it is critical to the success of hundreds of thousands of AWS customers.

The Software Development Manager of capacity deployment will deliver systems and software to scale capacity and enable AWS’s network connectivity experience that sets the global standard for AWS network performance, availability, security and cost for our customers. The manager will be part of a team supporting delivery of all Amazon network connectivity with a core focus on the AWS backbone network but also owning the software deployment eco-system for all capacity related operations. Amazon.com is looking for a highly motivated Software Development Manager to help build and scale one of the world's largest networks.

Key job responsibilities

  • Lead a team of highly qualified network, system and software development engineers to automate and optimize capacity scaling across a few domains including the backbone, fiber and optical line system delivery.

  • Be responsible for end to end ownership of software systems, including owning the software vision and roadmap across the capacity engineering team, aligning to best practices, business and customer requirements

  • Grow and manage software and network development engineers responsible for developing and maintaining software

  • Be a technical and solution oriented leader managing according to agile software development lifecycle methodologies delivering high quality software and a development process that allows for rapid iterations

  • Show business and technical judgement to accelerate time to market of releases, minimizing technical debt while incrementally moving services towards the vision.

  • Ensure that software and tooling delivered are aligned with capacity deployment operations with ability to execute at scale

  • Continuously promote safe delivery through change control and operational excellence initiatives

  • Focus and manage services using data, metrics and dashboarding techniques

  • Collaborate with internal customers, partner teams and other stakeholders on deliveries and initiatives

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of engineering team management experience

  • 7+ years of engineering experience

  • 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience

  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy

  • Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers
