Summary This position is a Biological Science Technician, GS- 0404-7/8, working in Marquette, MI, for the R3-Marquette Biological Station. Responsibilities As a Biological Science Technician your duties will include, but are not limited to, the following: Assisting fish biologist team leader and other fish biologists to develop and draft plans that describe the field work required, specifically the portions that include technical procedures and field schedules. Leading members of a team to complete work plan objectives and tasks. Training and leading technical staff to develop, recommend, and implement procedures for biological sampling, safety, quality improvement, and orienteering in the field. Designing, fabricating, maintaining, repairing, and operating highly specialized fishery equipment (e.g., lamprey sterilization equipment and robotics, fish holding and hauling facilities, water filtration apparatus, water sampling devices, electrofishing gear, electrical/mechanical weirs, lampricide application equipment, nets, trawls, and traps). Collecting, measuring, and recording biological, physical, environmental, and geographical data. Operating, maintaining, and repairing motorized watercraft up to 26', non-motorized watercraft, ATV's, and vehicles with trailers. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Only experience and education obtained by 07/08/2024 will be considered. In order to qualify for this position you must satisfy the Minimum Qualification of the respective grade(s) to which you are applying. Minimum Qualification [GS-7] One year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-6 grade level in the Federal service in or directly related to the work of the position to be filled (e.g., fish and aquatic conservation, aquatic invasive species management). Qualifying experience may include: (1) providing technical support and participating with other team members in conducting lampricide treatments; (2) collecting, weighing, and measuring fish and aquatic organisms; (3) collecting and recording biological and physical data; (4) operating, repairing, and maintaining equipment and materials used in stream and lake surveys and treatments; (5) using a variety of tools including maps, compasses, GPS, computers, and other resources to navigate both in populated and remote areas. OR One full year of graduate-level education that is directly related to the work of the position (e.g., major study in fish biology, aquaculture or fish culture, limnology, ichthyology, etc. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. OR A combination of education and experience as described in 1 and 2 above which together equals 100% of the requirement. Minimum Qualification [GS-8] One year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-7 grade level in the Federal service in or directly related to the work of the position to be filled (e.g., fish and aquatic conservation, aquatic invasive species management). Qualifying experience may include: (1) providing technical support and participating with other team members in conducting lampricide treatments; (2) leading small field crews of employees and ensuring completion of daily assignments; (3) collecting and interpreting biological data; (4) operating, maintaining, repairing, and fabricating specialized fishery sampling equipment; (5) using a variety of tools including maps, compasses, GPS, computers, and other resources to navigate both in populated and remote areas. OR Two years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree -OR- possess a master's or equivalent graduate degree that is directly related to the work of the position (e.g., major study in fish biology, aquaculture or fish culture, limnology, ichthyology, etc.). One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. OR A combination of education and experience as described in 1 and 2 above which together equals 100% of the requirement. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: You must pass a pre-employment medical examination. Also, you may be subject to post-employment medical examinations to determine if you are maintaining the fitness standards for this position. You must meet medical standards to assure the ability to perform field work safely. New employees must pass a pre-employment medical examination, and the incumbent will require continued medical clearance through periodic medical examinations. Also, the incumbent will be subject to exposure specific medical surveillance testing before and a er field seasons. Retention is subject to satisfactory completion of a physical capability test immediately a er entering on duty. The physical capability test will simulate the li ing, carrying, and emptying of containers of lampricide (TFM, 50lbs.). Failure to satisfactorily complete this physical capability test may result in the incumbent being terminated from his/her employment with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. PCS INFORMATION: Yes, entitlements for payment of basic moving expenses, as required and to the extent allowed by the Federal Travel Regulation (FTR) 302-3.101, are authorized for eligible applicants changing duty station when the change meets the distance tests as provided in FTR 302-1.1 and 302-2.6.
