MADISON STREETS EAST Maintenance and Repair Coordinator in MADISON, Wisconsin

JOB REQUIREMENTS: This is responsible supervisory work in directing assigned skilled and semi-skilled workers in shop and building maintenance activities, and de-centralized vehicle repair and maintenance. This class is characterized by independent judgment and discretion in scheduling and supervising employees. Reporting to a Public Works General Supervisor, work is reviewed for compliance with established procedures and standards. This position reports to the Public Works General Supervisors assigned to Streets East or Streets West, depending on the position\'s assigned location. This position will manage the maintenance and repair sections of either 1) the Sycamore Avenue or 2) Badger Road and South Point Streets Division maintenance shops and facilities. The selected candidate will work with private contractors and sales personnel, will purchase and keep inventories of the supplies needed by the various sections of the Streets Division. Additionally, the employee will assist with and ensure compliance with annual Department of Transportation (DOT) inspections, will ensure compliance with safety codes and regulations, and will assist with the development of short and long-range goals and programs of the Street Division. The Maintenance and Repair Coordinator will supervise seven to eight full-time employees across two shifts that are assigned to this position and numerous seasonal or daily assigned employees and will be responsible for assisting in the hiring, evaluation, field testing, promotion, and discipline of employees assigned to the Streets Division. This position will be in the winter Snow and Ice overtime rotation as a supervisor. This position will oversee the Street Division Capital Budget and Operational Budget as it pertains to the buildings and grounds of the Streets Division. Meet with vendors or suppliers to discuss products used in repair work. Interpret specifications, blueprints, or job orders to construct templates and lay out reference points for workers. Monitor tool and part inventories and the condition and maintenance of shops to ensure adequate working conditions. Inspect, test, and measure completed work, using devices such as hand tools or gauges to verify conformance to standards or repair requirements. Examine objects, systems, or facilities and analyze information to determine needed installations, services, or repairs. Perform skilled repair or maintenance operations, using equipment such as hand or power tools, hydraulic presses or shears, or welding equipment. Inspect and monitor work areas, examine tools and equipment, and provide employee safety training to prevent, detect, and correct unsafe conditions or violations of procedures and safety rules. Monitor employees\' work levels and review work performance. Participate in budget preparation and administration, coordinating purchasing and documentation and monitoring departmental expenditures. Confer with personnel, such as management, engineering, quality control, customer, or union workers\' representatives, to coordinate work activities, resolve employee grievances, or identify and review resource needs. ***** OTHER EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS: Three (3) years of responsible experience as a skilled worker in building and mechanical repair activities, including at least one (1) year of experience in a lead or supervisory capacity; AND Bachelor\'s degree in Business Administration, Construction Management, or a related field. OR Four (4) years of experience in applying the methods, techniques, standard tools and equipment, and materials used in varied building, mechanical, and vehicle maintenance work; AND Two (2) years of experience in applying related occupational hazards and safety precautions (this experience may have been gained at the same time as the above experience). Special Requirements: Ability to operate a wide variety of specialized equipment. Ability to use a variety of hand tools, specialized tools, multi-meters, and test equipment. Ability to use computer programs applicable to the duties of the position, including Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word. Physical Requirements: Ability to work long hours under all types of weather conditions. Ability to be on call 24 hours per day.
