MADISON GAS & ELECTRIC CO Engineering Technician II in MADISON, Wisconsin
JOB REQUIREMENTS: POSITION PURPOSE Provide Madison Gas and Electric Company (MGE) with the technical expertise necessary to plan, design, construct, and maintain the gas and electric distribution system with a focus on new service requests, existing service rebuilds, and modifications within the framework of established safety codes, governmental codes such as Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSCW) requirements, and Company rules and regulations. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Responds timely to customers\' requests to install new, modify existing, or upgrade existing gas and electric services in the most reliable, cost-efficient, and environmentally friendly method. Customers can be both internal and external. Conducts site inspections to gather information for the evaluation of existing facilities and site parameters used in the design of new and modified gas and electric extensions. This information is used to establish, evaluate, and negotiate cost estimates for construction of Company distribution extensions and service laterals to serve new and existing customers as efficiently as possible. Prepares and submits service orders and job orders, including bills of material, necessary to construct and maintain Company distribution systems to meet the needs of new and existing customers and to build and document the gas and electrical system. Consults with Gas and Electric Services, Electric Distribution Engineering, Electric Construction and Operations, Materials Management, Rights-of-Way, and Electric System Planning to plan, schedule, and coordinate Company projects to satisfy customer schedules and increase crew efficiency. Develops, evaluates, and negotiates the necessary rights-of-way easements and permits for extending the Company\'s distribution system. Performs other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience Associate degree in power engineering, civil engineering, or equivalent preferred. Experience in the electric/gas utility field preferred. Knowledge and Skills Knowledge of gas and electric systems, utility gas and electric systems, basic engineering skills, and understanding of or ability to understand the Company\'s gas and electric distribution system. Maintain knowledge of appropriate safety codes, governmental codes such as PSCW requirements, Company rules and regulations, and Company construction standards. Good human relations skills for clear communication with customers, supervisors, peers, and Company-favorable relationships with trade ally representatives, external organizations, and other entities necessary for successful project completion. Able to read, understand, and interpret a wide variety of drawings, maps, and sketches.
