University of Louisville Clinical Research Nurse IV (Occupational Health Nurse) in Louisville, Kentucky

Minimum Requirements:Bachelor's degree in Nursing with current Kentucky license and 6 (six) years of related nursing experience. Grade 10 (Salary)Position Description:This position of Clinical Research Nurse IV serves as the Occupational Health Nurse and represents the university in this capacity by focusing on promotion and restoration of health, prevention of illness and injury, and protection from occupational hazards. This position serves multiple University of Louisville communities, including researchers, animal care providers, and service personnel. The Occupational Health Nurse develops, implements, and provides an integrated approach to delivery of comprehensive, quality occupational health services conducting consultative and clinical services for a wide variety of research and support organizations. This position advocates for employees fostering equitable and quality health care services and safe and healthy environments in which to work. The position fosters strong working relationships with the research community including the principal investigators, laboratory workers, animal care staff, users of research animals, researchers using rDNA and select agents, EHS and Facilities personnel.Responsibilities include new employee onboarding, health hazard assessment, immunization review and administration, medical evaluation for respirator use, supervision of ancillary staff, injury/illness consultation, promotion of intervention strategies, and assuring compliance with legal, regulatory, and ethical standards. This position will also be responsible for initial program development including clinical space, electronic medical records, creation of administrative systems/ protocols, supplies and equipment.The position works closely with and fosters strong working relationships with the UofL Infectious disease health care providers and staff, including doctors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, and nursing assistants.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesDevelops and implements components of the health assessment for new employee onboarding, ensuring effectiveness within the regulatory guidelines of governmental organizations and accrediting bodies.Designs and implements appropriate intervention strategies to improve worker health and safety and establish regulatory-based medical surveillance programs.Implements components of the medical surveillance-screening program, ensuring effective functioning within the guidelines of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC).Manages the overall operations of the Occupational Health program, perform health screening and assessment of researchers working with infectious diseases acquired from live animals, animal tissues, excreta and allergens and other health risks associated with laboratory animal care and research activities in collaboration with and advice from medical director.Work collaboratively with University Risk Management on the treatment of occupational research exposures to coordinate care, manage the case and coordinate the employee’s return to work.Collaborates with a multi-disciplinary team of professional and specialists to identify adverse health exposures in the work environment; design and implement appropriate intervention strategies with this team to improve worker health and safety.Collaborates with Occupational Health and Safety to identify employees requiring respirator medical evaluations and respiratory fit testing.Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders regarding occupational health issues.Collaborate with the biosafety officer, IACUC, IBC, and medical director to develop Post Exposure Protocols (PEP) for potential exposure to infectious agents and vaccine preventable illnesses.Performs clinical interventions such as immunization administration, venipuncture, push-pull test, Ishihara test for color deficiency, and clinical consultation.Responsible for clinical documentation on record keeping and communicative platforms.Provides patient communication, documentation of results, and overall surveillance for the hearing conservation program.Ensures Occupational Health mandated requirements are upheld and are integrated into policies, programs, and training.Stays up to date with new and improved standards for occupational health care.Maintain accessible and confidential individual employee medical and exposure records.Perform quality assurance analysis for case management.Preferred QualificationsRecognition as a Certified Occupational Health Nurse (COHN) by the American Board of Occupational Health Nursing.Master's degree in Public Health or other healthcare profession.Experience in workplace/occupational health issues.Experience in providing occupational health services in support of research protocols involving Center for Disease Control and National Institute of Health Animal Use Research guidelines.Experience in establishing new programs and setting up new practices.Management or supervisory experienceCompetenciesAbility to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.Outstanding customer service skills.Knowledge of federal, state and local requirements that govern occupational health care and employee health records in an academic institution or health care setting.Ability to determine when an MD or supervisor needs to be alerted to situations, and which circumstances need Medical advice before proceeding with action.Ability to perform phlebotomy, vaccinations, and patient assessments.Excellent verbal and written communication skills in working with researchers, healthcare professionals, administrators, employees, environmental health and safety staff, and regulatory agencies.Excellent computer skills with such programs as Microsoft Office, including the ability to write policies and procedures in Word, create and maintain spreadsheets with formulas in Excel, create presentations in PowerPoint, and use Outlook daily for email and time management.Strong understanding of electronic medical records and able to select and implement new system.Assist management with maintaining Occupational Health clinic inventory, ensuring vaccines and supplies are stocked and accounted for appropriately.Knowledge of needed equipment and maintenance requirements.Strong organizational, time management and attention to detail skills.Target Compensation Maximum:$124,200.00Target Compensation Minimum:$82,800.00Compensation will be commensurate to candidate experience.Equal Employment OpportunityThe University of Louisville is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer, and is committed to providing employment opportunities to all qualified applicants without regard to race, sex, age, color, national origin, ethnicity, creed, religion, disability, genetic information, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity and expression, marital status, pregnancy, or veteran status.
