University of Southern California Student Services Advisor I in Los Angeles, California

Student Services Advisor IApply (https://usc.wd5.myworkdayjobs.com/ExternalUSCCareers/job/Los-Angeles-CA---University-Park-Campus/Student-Services-Advisor-I_REQ20150382/apply) Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences Los Angeles, California

The University of Southern California (USC), founded in 1880, is located in the heart of downtown L.A. and is the largest private employer in the City of Los Angeles. As an employee of USC, you will be a part of a world-class research university and a member of the “Trojan Family,” which is comprised of the faculty, students and staff that make the university a great place to work.

As a community of Dornsife College “we are committed to the creation, preservation, and communication of fundamental knowledge in all its forms…as well as a lifelong passion for learning and a commitment to the betterment of society.” The academic mission of Dornsife College can only be realized to its fullest potential when we build and protect a representative, equitable, inclusive culture of scholarship for students, faculty, and staff. This is not done through initiatives but by embedding these values into the everyday interactions, relationships, policies, and practices of the College. What is required is a seamless integration of the tenets of equity and inclusivity into every facet of academic life. If we want our scholars, staff, and students to be able to give their very best, we must create an academic environment that portends success.

Success is possible when every member of the Dornsife community owns their role as a steward of the culture in which we learn, research, and work; when we believe that it is because of who we are that we are able to do what we do: achieve excellence, together.

Achieving a robust and inclusive academic culture requires more than just the completion of a task, but includes that person’s capacity to contribute positively to the relationships and culture of their office or department. Therefore, any applicant seeking to advance the mission of Dornsife College should also be assessed on their capacities beyond the technical elements of their work, and demonstrate an understanding of their impact on others, and to articulate how they contribute positively to those around them.

DORNSIFE UNDERGRADUATE HONORS PROGRAMS

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

STUDENT SERVICES ADVISOR I

Undergraduate Honors Programs in the Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, invites applications for the full-time staff position of Student Services Advisor I.

This position works with USC’s population of bright, highly motivated students in the Thematic Option Honors Program, USC’s honors general education program. Open to highly motivated students, it is a rigorous academic program emphasizing extensive amounts of reading and writing. We integrate advanced expository writing into the substance of our courses, and writing instructors meet with the students in bi-weekly tutorials. The core courses are interdisciplinary and are designed to give students an extensive background in the liberal arts and sciences. Our classes are small, and we actively recruit outstanding professors who are willing to make a substantial dedication of both time and energy to their students.

Obviously, such a program is more demanding than the regular freshman selection of general education classes derived from different, yet siloed, disciplines and departments; interdisciplinary classes are by their nature more rigorous since they offer an unusually wide range of knowledge and task students to think outside and between traditional methods of study and draw connections. Students who complete our program have met a competitive academic challenge and with few exceptions go on to achieve distinction in their major studies. Thematic Option attracts the best of USC’s incoming freshmen, and thus the level of coursework and participation can rise to the level of these outstanding students’ abilities.

Responsibilities of the Advisor I include advisement of Thematic Option students during registration periods, summer orientations, and as needed throughout the academic year, providing academic counseling, assistance in selecting majors and minors, registration support, and personal guidance. This person will also help plan the academic year by providing logistical support to the director and faculty and developing community-building programming for honors students.

The individual in this position must be able to explain honors programs to prospective and incoming students and their families. In doing so, this person will serve as a welcoming representative of both honors programs and USC-at-large, as often they are one of the primary points of contact for honors students and parents. In addition, this position prepares necessary materials, aids in enrollment management, and facilitates presentations that cover honors programs’ requirements, opportunities, and policies. Course support responsibilities include arranging classroom space, setting up media and presentations, interfacing with institutions around Los Angeles to procure tickets and coordinate special programming, and helping arrange both on- and off-campus events. Overall, this position is actively involved in furthering the honors community across programs, making it an intellectual experience that extends beyond the classroom.
