Los Alamos National Laboratory Procurement Engineer (R&D Engineer 1/2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the R&D Engineer 1 or R&D Engineer 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The DP Division is the premier Production Agency (PA) assigned to produce War Reserve (WR) detonators for our nation's nuclear stockpile security mission. The Division is part of LANL's Weapons Production Directorate. DP is comprised of a team of motivated, highly skilled technical and operational support staff working in an integrated format. The organization is centered on high-rigor manufacturing operations to produce precise, safe, and reliable WR products. DP partners closely with customers and stakeholders (such as the National Nuclear Security Administration [NNSA]), design agencies (LANL, Sandia National Lab [SNL], and Lawrence Livermore National Lab [LLNL]), and LANL program management organizations to deliver on challenging national security objectives. The Detonator Production Procurement and Supply Chain Management Group (DP-4) is seeking energetic and customer-focused seasoned Procurement Engineers to lead Procurement Engineering functions in support of all detonator manufacturing efforts at TA-22. Selected candidates will assist the first-line manager in the development and delivery of supply chain contracts, non-disclosure agreements (NDA), etc., to support War Reserve (WR) procurement. Selected candidates will be responsible for working with technical project managers, product engineers, process engineers, and quality engineers to extract data from engineering drawings, specifications, and requirements; conducting supplier management from identification to site visits and qualification; developing comprehensive procurement packages; acting as procurement SME in Integrated Project Team (IPT) meetings; interacting with warehouse personnel; managing Consolidate Bill of Material and other related activities aimed at providing efficient and professional support to its many customers.

The selected candidate(s) will identify inefficiencies in the supply chain management, work to improve inefficiencies by formalizing and standardizing processes continually, then apply these principles to improve the supply chain management, prevent and correct the supply management crisis, and process consumable procurements.

Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

R&D Engineer 1 (Salary $92,300 - $151,000)

  • Assist with applying complex, integrated, and overlapping requirements for detonator production to include but not limited to weapon quality.

  • Assist with evaluating materials to procure for a non-nuclear facility and/or highly regulated environment.

  • Develop proficiency in applying QA principles outlined in quality programs.

  • Maintain all training current necessary to performed job function.

  • Familiarity with evaluating materials and creating material take offs from engineering design packages.

  • Familiarity with materials management and reporting in IPT meetings.

  • Participate in the conceptual and final design reviews.

  • Ability to serve as TSME to create comprehensive procurement packages including QA requirements, SOWs and other exhibits.

R&D Engineer 2 (Salary $101,700 - $168,200)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the following duties are expected:

  • Applying complex, integrated, and overlapping requirements for detonator manufacturing to include but not limited to weapon quality.

  • Evaluating materials to procure for a production facility and/or highly regulated environment.

  • Applying QA principles

  • Improving the WR material supply chain management process.

  • Evaluating materials and creating material take offs from engineering design packages.

  • Materials management and reporting in IPT meetings.

  • Contributing to conceptual and other design reviews.

  • Serve as TSME to create comprehensive procurement packages including QA requirements, SOWs and other exhibits.

  • Lead walk-downs aimed at understanding project scope and validate existing conditions.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Computing/Business Systems

Above average computer skills and demonstrated proficient experience with Inventory Control, Material Tracking systems such as the CBOM, and proficient in various software suites, including but not limited to, Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.

Customer Service

Exceptional customer service skills and the ability to provide clear, concise support and guidance to others in sometimes-stressful situations. Experience interacting professionally with all types of personnel, including external interfaces and executive management.

Communication

Record of effective written and oral communication skills as evidenced by internal and/or external interactions, seminars, briefings, presentations, or publications. Ability to communicate findings and make recommendations.

Organizational Skills

Possess high attention to detail including excellent organizational skills, analytical thinking, observational skills and problem-solving skills all to include high accuracy. Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and adjust to the workings of a dynamic and cohesive fast-paced team environment.

Additional Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 2:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Ability to work independently and excise sound technical judgement.

  • Participation in developing, standardizing, and documenting process for improvement initiatives.

  • Participation in the development of supply chain contract.

  • Mentoring and training of junior personnel

  • Ability to lead focused actions or small initiatives.

Education and Experience

R&D Engineer 1: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution related to the occupation combined with 2 years of related experience.

R&D Engineer 2: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Active DOE Q Clearance.

  • Familiarity with LANL Engineering Standards Manual/Master Specifications.

  • Knowledge of industry, regulatory, or DOE/NNSA complex specific codes, standards.

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.
