State of Montana Fish Hatchery Manager in Lewistown, Montana

Must have good speaking and writing skills, and good computer skills with ability to use Microsoft Office software. Must have good math skills, including use of statistics and algebra. Must be able to handle the physical demands of the job (capable of lifting and carrying 50 lb objects numerous times on a daily basis and working outdoors in all kinds of weather). Must possess basic vocational skills in repair and maintenance or could learn them without extensive training. Must possess, or get within six weeks from first day of work, a Montana commercial driver license with tanker and air brake endorsements, and a DOT medical examiner's certificate. Must be willing to accept extreme working conditions, flexible hours, and extensive trips of a week or longer. State housing is provided at the hatchery and employee is required to live on site. Employee will perform fish and water supply protection duty after hours and work weekends and holidays in rotation with other employees living in state housing. This typically results in working one weekend out of every four. Big Springs Trout Hatchery is Montana's largest coldwater production fish hatchery, raising trout and salmon which are stocked in various ponds and lakes throughout Montana from April through October. For more information about Lewistown and the surrounding area, visit their websitehttp://enioylewistown.com/ Job Duties: * The ideal candidate for the Big Springs Hatchery manager position should possess and show the management and supervisory skills necessary to operate a large multi-species facility in a productive and positive manner. The candidate will be able to direct the activities of subordinates, and schedule and supervise all fish culture and stocking activities of the facility effectively, efficiently and safely. The incumbent will also provide and perform skilled and technical fish culture techniques and monitor fish production programs for several fish culture parameters. These include but are not limited to spawning protocols, fish growth, rearing densities, flow indexes, water quality and fish health. The candidate should be open- minded to the opinions, thoughts, ideas, and feelings of those that work with or for them. The ideal candidate must determine, acknowledge and then rectify conflicts in the hatchery in a concise, yet respectful manner while, following department procedures. Performs task outside of regular duties such as working at other hatcheries (helping with spawning or stocking), spawning wild brood stocks, and performing various public relation activities (tours, kids fishing day, presentations, school activities). *Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience): The knowledge, skills, and abilities of this position are normally attained through combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in biology, Fisheries, Aquaculture, Environmental Sciences, Zoology, Wildlife, or associated field and at least 1 year of job-related experience. Other combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis. This position may require a Montana Commercial Driver’s License Type 2 Class B and the ability to safely and effectively drive and operate combination vehicles over 26,000 lbs G.V.W. This license also requires an initial drug and alcohol test and then random drug testing to maintain the CDL.
