About the Position: Serves in the Ammonium Perchlorate Rocket Motor Demil Facility. Responsibilities Serves as an Operator and Maintainer of the Ammonium Perchlorate (AP) Rocket Motor Demilitarization (ARMD) Facility for Letterkenny Munitions Center (LEMC). Performs a variety of duties and tasks while serving as a technical expert on the closed loop rocket motor demilitarization apparatus. Monitors the ARMD controls system (HMI, PLC, equipment panels, etc.,) to ensure proper functioning. Monitors the pH levels in the various tanks, adjusts flows of pH neutralizers, adjusts levels to maintain proper pH, calibrates pH probes and monitors temperature and pressure readings throughout the system. Prepares AP ARMD facility for up to 20 motor firing cycles during each shift by testing and inspecting numerous systems, sub-systems, and components. Performs routine inspections, adjustments, repairs, and replacements of system components as well as preventative maintenance on the numerous complex systems and sub-systems of the ARMD. Performs inspection, troubleshooting, defect isolation, and repairs required to ensure the complex ordnance equipment and multi-component devices are functioning properly. Performs inspection of tactical rocket motors looking for corrosion, damage, propellant abnormalities, nomenclature and ensures motors are safe to handle. Operates forklift (up to 28,000 lb. Capacity) for transporting the rocket motors, missiles, and ammunition. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an ARMD Facility Operator/Maintainer without more than normal supervision. 1) Utilizing the Ammonium Perchlorate (AP) Rocket Motor Demilitarization (ARMD) equipment to determine nature and scope of repairs, adjustments, and/or replacement of components. and 2) Design, test, install, and modify specialized tools, fixtures, and equipment for a variety of ammunition and missile related operations. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (Other Than Blueprint Reading) Dexterity and Safety Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, and Repair, etc. Knowledge of Materials Technical Practices (Theoretical, Precise, Artistic) Use of Measuring Instruments Moderate physical exertion is required. There is frequent standing, bending, and working in tiring positions. Work requires lifting and carrying items (tools, equipment parts, and components) from 10 to 40 pounds (and occasionally items weighing up to 50 pounds). Work can require large amounts of walking between control areas, processing equipment, and equipment bays. Operators are required to bend, stoop, and stand for extended periods of time to work around the equipment during operations, inspection, and troubleshooting activities. Workspace is limited in many instances requiring operators to be in awkward positions for long periods of time, often exceeding 10 minutes in length. Work frequently requires going up and down steps and on elevated structures (12 to 14 feet high). Work also includes working on outside high platforms (25 feet) and using appropriate man lifts to perform inspections, troubleshooting, and maintenance on equipment 30 to 40 feet off the ground. Incumbent must pass physical examination for working with and handling hazardous propellants and explosives and for entering confined spaces. Work is performed inside well lighted, climate-controlled buildings. Work is also performed outside with exposure to weather extremes. Outside work will frequently occur and will involve extreme hot and cold conditions, inclement weather, rain, dust, etc. Some operations require workers to wear protective clothing and respirator. Work may include donning full protective clothing (Tyvek and full face/half mask respirators) when performing some of the system inspection and maintenance. Operators are subject to profuse perspiration and extreme fatigue when working in protective clothing. Operators are subject to injuries such as cuts, bruises and thermal/acidic burns while performing equipment inspection, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Operators are exposed to high heat situations from the energetics thermal treatment equipment. Protective clothing for high heat equipment is sometimes required. Operators are subject to broken bones and injuries from falls when climbing steps and working on elevated structures. Operators are required to wear fall protection harnesses in some situations. Operators are exposed to electrical shock and burns. Arc rated protective clothing is required for electrical work. High pressure hydraulic and pneumatic systems can become injection hazards. Education Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
