POSITION: Home Maintenance Assistant I/OC
DEPARTMENT: Council on Aging
SALARY: \$20.09 per hour

EXEMPT/NON-EXEMPT: Non-Exempt
SUPERVISOR: Assistant Director
SUPERVISES: No
\% OF TIME ACCOUNTABILITIES
60% Completes minor home maintenance projects and performs Curb-to-Curb trash
service for qualifying participants
30% Provides lawn maintenance and snow removal (as needed) for Chore program
caseload.
5% Assesses need for and completes maintenance on program tools & equipment.
5% Completes other building chores as assigned.
SCOPE OF WORK:
This is an intermittent/on-call (I/OC) position working a maximum of 1,000 hours per year. Under the general
supervision of the Assistant Director, the Home Maintenance Assistant provides minor home maintenance to
program participants homes to ensure their safety and to assist them with living independently in their
homes. This position provides lawn maintenance/snow removal to qualifying participants and assists
participants with Curb-to-Curb trash service by placing city-provided trash receptacle at the curb or placing up
to 3 trash bags at the curb for pick up.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Knowledge of basic carpentry skills and the use of appropriate tools.
Knowledge of and experience using a variety of lawn equipment including a push mower, riding lawn
mower, weed eater, leaf vacuum and leaf blower.
Knowledge of proper care of equipment.
Knowledge of appropriate safety precautions and gear when operating various tools and equipment.
HUMAN RELATIONS:
Serves as the face of the department, offering friendly service and conversation to participants
receiving services.
Communicates effectively, verbally and in writing, with clients and co-workers.
Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with clients, other agencies and/or
departments, supervisors, and co-workers.
Maintains a friendly, professional working attitude while representing the agency.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS:
Provides minor home maintenance to support clients safety and independence, including, but not
limited to, replacing smoke detector batteries, changing light bulbs, replacing hinges/locks, installing
smoke detectors/window AC units, etc.
Provides regular lawn maintenance/snow removal for qualifying participants.
For Curb-to-Curb trash service clients, places city-provided trash receptacle at the curb or places up to
3 trash bags at the curb.
Contacts clients to confirm appointments and maintains log of work completed.
Serves as a mandatory reporter for Chore program clients and relays any suspected abuse/neglect to
Supervisor.
Determines maintenance needs for equipment.
ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:
Work is performed primarily outdoors but is also done in clients homes.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School diploma or GED
Possess and maintain a valid KS drivers license.
Have the ability to obtain certification in AED and CPR.
Must be able to pass pre-employment KBI background check.
ADA/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Vision Adequate vision to be able to drive and perform tasks.
Hearing Adequate for normal conversation with co-workers, Supervisor, Director and
senior citizens.
Speech Must be able to speak and understand the English language clearly to provide
detailed information by telephone and in person.
