Job Description:

We invite applications for a non-tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of the Practice. This faculty position is expected to teach in the graduate program in Organizational Communication and undergraduate program in Professional Studies. These courses are offered at the Edwards Campus in Overland Park and online. The candidate will be expected to teach in various formats such as in-person, hybrid, and online.

The appointment is a Fiscal Year (12-month) appointment with an initial term of 3 years. This appointment carries a teaching component, which includes a typical course load of eight courses annually (three in the fall, three in the spring and two in the summer). This appointment also carries a service component. Subsequent appointments may be offered, contingent upon a satisfactory comprehensive performance evaluation during the final year of this appointment and approval of the Dean of the School of Professional Studies.

Special consideration will be given to applicants committed to excellence who can contribute to the University’s innovative, collaborative, and multidisciplinary initiatives to educate leaders, build healthy communities, and make discoveries that will change the world. This position serves the education needs of a Johnson County Education Research Triangle (JCERT) program. Specific percentages of effort for JCERT are determined each year.

Teaching - 75%

This position is responsible for teaching eight (8) courses annually, typically three in the fall, three in the spring and two in the summer. The courses must conform to the curricular needs of the programs. In addition to teaching courses, the incumbent should be available to students for advising, consultation, and research supervision.

  • Develop and teach eight (8) courses each year focused on the current Organizational Communication and Professional Studies curriculum and potential new courses.

  • Develop assignments; design class activities; respond to and evaluate student work in a timely manner; assign grades; and adhere to department, college, and university policies.

  • Hold regular office hours for students involved in classes taught. A minimum of three posted office hours each week is required.

  • Work collaboratively with faculty in the School of Professional Studies to ensure that the curriculum continues to meet the needs of our students, school, university, and transfer pipelines.

Service - 25%

Professional service encompasses a variety of activities, which includes:

  • Actively promoting the graduate and undergraduate programs through various recruitment and promotional activities;

  • Enhancing and improving program curriculum;

  • Engaging in scholarly pedagogical and professional development activities;

  • Mentoring students;

  • Assisting the Program Director with program assessment activities;

  • Participating on committees at KU and the School of Professional Studies;

  • Contributing to the activities of community outreach and professional development;

For this Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of the Practice position, the following are required qualifications:

  1. Master’s degree in Communication Studies, or a closely related field, is expected by the start date of the appointment.

  2. Experience in an industry role or consultancy in Organizational Communication, Human Resources, Training, Learning and Development, or related fields.

  3. Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication skills, as evidenced by application materials and interview process.

Rank of position will be determined based upon years of qualified professional experience in Organizational Communication, Human Resources, Training, Learning and Development, or related fields:

  • Assistant Professor of the Practice: 3 - 5 years

  • Associate Professor of the Practice: 6 - 15 years

Position Overview:

Asst/Assoc/Full Professor of the Practice – Organizational Communication and Professional Studies

This position serves the graduate program in Organizational Communication and undergraduate program in Professional Studies, which are housed in the School of Professional Studies at the University of Kansas Edwards Campus (KUEC) in Overland Park, Kansas. KUEC has been a KU presence in Kansas City for 30 years, playing a crucial role in the Greater KC professional community. The campus offers several undergraduate and graduate degrees and certificates with classes geared toward working professionals, available in the evening, online and in-person.

KU’s Organizational Communication graduate program is designed for working professionals. The program includes an MA in Organizational Communication as well as graduate certificates designed as standalone programs or add-ons for KU students in a variety of graduate degree programs.

KU’s Bachelor of Professional Studies (BPS) undergraduate program is designed for undergraduate students with a strong interest in practical training in professional management career pathways. The BPS degree is a professional-track baccalaureate completion degree for students transferring to KU with an associate degree or equivalent hours and who are looking to complete the last two years necessary for a bachelor’s degree. Students in the BPS program choose a concentration that aligns with their professional goals in the areas of Applied Data Analytics, Health Policy and Management, or Project Management.

All Professor of Practice positions, regardless of rank, are non-tenured positions appointed for a three-year period. Contracts are renewable, based on results from annual performance reviews. This is a 12-month, non-tenured position.
